Question Garret GT turbo upgrade options for the I5T. Decisions decisions...

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
So, after getting the race exhaust or my S6, it's got me itching for POWAH! Since I'm so close to the good men at 034 Motorsport, I'm not even considering any other options for a BT other than theirs.

The thing is, which one should I do!? I don't want to sacrifice reliability for horsepower, but I also don't want to regret going too small. I'm pretty sure I have my mind set, but I'd love to hear other people's opinions.

Re: Garret GT turbo upgrade options for the I5T. Decisions decisions...

Anything over 350hp (RS2 spec) you need to do new rods for. For the 350hp kit you need bigger injectors, RS2 exhaust manifold, cold air intake, and waste gate spring. Everything else can stay factory.

The exhaust manifold runs around 1K alone I believe (you can try to go without out, but the turbo lag is ridiculous).

I think the pistons are rated up to 700hp and the crank to 1,000hp so that shouldn't be an issue. If you build, you need rods, bearings, rings, engine gasket set, head bolts, all this on top of a tubular manifold, new lines for turbo, front mount, injectors, fuel pump, MAF (or go mafless depending on tune), wastegate, and a lot of tuning.

The 350hp is your cheapest and fastest option for a stock bottom end, otherwise get ready to build and pay. Honestly, I my cousin has an RS2 spec urS6 and it pulls hard and is a ball to drive. 034's set up spools quicker, and is just as good if not better than the RS2 turbo. I would go that route.

I.E. GT2871R ~425HP ...with a mild tune you should be fine....you can always crank it up a little more and "accidentaly" blow a rod thus ABSOLUTLY having to rebuild your engine with higher grade components to make it more reliable.
....thats the excuse I would use.

Anthony- Im sure you already know this, but 034 is doing a group buy on a log manifold for $250!!!!

And all of 034s stage 1 chips are for stock bottom ends, and some other AANs are running 400wheel (though riding on thin ice) from what ive heard anywhere under 400wheel and youll be okay (but i have no personal experience, just lots of STFA)

Well if it helps any, I'd be running on a "mild" tune until I get the motor built. Firstly, I'll just be doing their bolt-on kit. The stock turbo is just too teeny tiny!

Ask yourself how much you have to spend . . . then expect to fork out more for odds n end hardware and what-nots . .

Remember , "it's expensive to be cheap" . . Cutting corners here and there will cost you in the long run . . I say build the bottom first , Kolbenschmidt main bearings , clevite 77 rod bearings, Scat or another H-beam rod, new rings, ARP main studs , ARP head studs , Reinz engine gasket and seal kit,get new mani/header to head studs, water pump and timing belt and be done with it . . This way you wont have to take off all the new stuff you bolted on when u pull engine to get the block hot-tanked and honed when u do the rebuild . . You can keep the stock wastegate too ,

I had the Garrett GT3071R for 2 years til it went on me . . Now i'm sporting the Garrett GT30/40R . .I like theGT30/40R much more !!!!

Yeah, uh...2871 is not going to get you 425chp

you want a 30r aka 3076. Awesome turbo and will get you those mild numbers quite nicely and then when you want to build it and crank the boost up later, you can make almost 500whp with it (I say almost because awd car).

Manifold will cost you $250 from 034 and will support 600hp. IF you buy now. Either way, you can thank me for not having to buy a $1000+ cast manifold now. ;)

The rest has been mentioned already.

Re: Garret GT turbo upgrade options for the I5T. Decisions decisions...

    Anthony,

Really depends on how wild you want to go later. You can run the larger turbos, such as a 30r, on a mild tune as you gather parts for a built motor. It will be laggy in comparison to your stock turbo for sure, but you have loads of room to grow if you want to go big bhp. 35r is large and if you really want to go big, but personally the 3071r is plenty big from my experience for most folks who want a daily driver/monster. I've driven several 3071r's and it's a nice compromise and a step up from the RS2. If you aren't going huge power and don't want a built motor the RS2 turbo is still an amazing little turbo. No other turbo really has the abilities of the RS2, even though it's old hat they really nailed that turbo perfectly for this motor.

My old 90q20v turbo just had the 3071r kit from 034 installed and he said it's a monster at 27+psi. I can only imagine, man I miss that car!

Either way 034 will set you up!

    Cheers,
    Alexander van Gerbig

Re: Garret GT turbo upgrade options for the I5T. Decisions decisions...

So I have decided on the GT3071R kit. The car's only putting down an estimated 220HP on the MTM tune, and it should get into the mid-300HP range with the new turbo. New cams, rods, etc will be coming later on down the road.

The car will be with the masters at 034 towards the end of the month, and will also be test fit for a FMIC to be stuffed behind the shortened European front bumper. I'm hoping they'll be able to work even more magic there as well...

Needless to say I'm pretty excited!

Re: Garret GT turbo upgrade options for the I5T. Decisions decisions...

I made 360whp/342ft.lbs on a 30R with an 034 rs2 exhaust manifold and vems standalone (630cc injectors, 525hp Garret fmic, 034 3in exhaust with no cat). That was a conservative tune, on stock internals, stock clutch. I got bored with it about 20mins after getting the car off the dyno. Switched to this for this summer:

Don't know, don't care. B18's can spin these things, I'm not worried at all. It's been done before on these "little ass motors".

Anthony, you should def go with the 3076r as it has almost identical flow characteristics of the 3071 but can support up to 100hp more! If you really want to look into something different to you could also check out the 3082 which should flow just in between the 3076r and 35r.

Personally though I would recommend checking out the hta turbos as they are built from the gt series turbos but have been tested to spool up to 700 rpms sooner on the 1.8t. Check them out here...

*interesting new look to the forum..

if i were you, i would go with the closest thing to a modern version of the RS2 set up... i personally cant imagine my
car being any slower and, i see it as a good point.. it's really pretty quick for what it is. with this set up, it seems to be the last "stage" you'd
want before you went full build.. correct me if i'm wrong..
good luck, im lookin fwd to what you end up doing... since even though you seem to have made your decision, you're still debating.. ;)

Yeah I'll probably be debating the decision until the day I drop the car off at 034. Actually, maybe more like until the day I go and pick it up.

im still trying to figure out what my HP goal is.... what kind of HP would I need to be looking at mid to low 13's?

Unfortunately these cars are Pigs and not designed for the drag strip . . . My buddy had a "Full" RS2'd urS4 with ported head ,VEMS standalone ,6 speed , and more, and just broke into the high 12's (12.9 i believe) . . . Weight is a factor !!

honestly i'd do a Gt2871RS or the GT28 because of the fast spool up. you'd probably get off the line a lot faster and less turbo lag when doing a run. my question is where would you use all that power? the freeway is only 65-70 MPH even though i go about 80-85. my K26 stock turbo gives me preety good power. true i wouldnt mind going with a bigger turbo but only if i had the money for it.

ha! it would be such a waste to put a 28 series turbo on a 2.2l. you hit peak tq at 1500rpms and run out of steam at like 3000rpms.. hell, the gt28rs on my 1.8t runs out of steam up top. and this is at altitude and with almost a half a liter less motor.

Anthony, go with jrock's suggestion. the 3076 spools identical(to the naked eye) to the 3071 and will give you 100hp more of flow.

but if i was to do it, it'd go HTA GT35r. it would give you 100hp more flow over the regular GT35r and would spool up as fast as the GT3076r
