    Another B5 A4 receiving a VW engine...

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
So I'm finally making a build thread for my B5, although I should have probably started this a year ago when it began, I guess better now than never. I really just want to do this to keep track of everything I've done and to hopefully provide some info to others. I would normally list out the specs, maybe when I have a chance to think of everything I've bought for this car lol. What it comes down to is basically a restored B5 with a built VRT with HP capabilities of at least 550WHP. I am building this car as a street car, and will try to keep it at low boost and hopefully be somewhere in the mid 400's on 93.

So it began in PA when I picked up this gem, was told the T belt snapped, brought it home, got it running and brought it to emissions.

    Then I stripped it.

Then really really stripped it and brought it to a buddy of mine thats a master fabricator.

Retained factory VR mounts and these mounts appear to be incredibly strong, but time will tell.

Once that was done I was able to get the engine bay ready for paint.

Another friend of mine came by and applied the granite crystal metallic, pictures do not do it justice...

By that time I had machined engine parts ready for assembly.

Went to town with black and gold

Mated the VR to its new AWD transmission

    Finally dropped it in place

After alot of money and testfitting the bay started to look more complete

The master fabricator then went to town on my vibrant core and 3" piping

And this is pretty much how she stands at this point

Will hopefully be receiving the custom harness and lugtronic ECU soon, and my buddy that is painting the car will be finishing up all the bodywork. Theres a few odds and ends, tiny lines to run and take care of but for the most part shes very close to startup.
Please feel free to ask any questions, I'd love to answer them, hopefully this will be moved to the projects thread and some people looking to throw a VR in their B5 will have a little more inspiration.

Love the simplicity with the welded in brackets. Genius! What transmission? And you plan on dumping the wg like that, or is it just like that for now. Reason I ask is what about rainy days? What turbo!

One of my dream builds. Congrats, sir!

Holy crap, this is a sweet build. Whats the plan on suspension and bumpers? Some rs4 bumpers would look real at home with the sound this thing is going to make.

01E, picked up the whole drivetrain from an S4 when I went to PA to buy this car, and yes completely plan on dumping W/G like that, I wont drive this car in rainy days, and if I ever do by chance get caught in the rain I have to imagine that any water that drops down the pipe and sit on the W/G valve and if there is some in there when it opens I have to believe that water will shoot out or evaporate before it ever gets inside. Oh and its a Precision 6266, 4" In, 2.5" Out, 3 5/8" Vband exhaust .68 AR exhaust side, recommended to me because of the terrible 1-2 RPM drop the 01E has.

The car had H&R springs on it when I bought it, I was happy with the ride height so I just purchased a set of new bilstein shocks for them, also would love to get a set of nice bumpers for this thing, but this wasn't a cheap build as everything is pretty much brand new, had to cut cost somewhere. :/

Thanks guys, can't wait to hear this thing, I'm well over a year into it but I'm closing in on finishing it.

Rolled it out to clean it up a bit the other day, may have the rest of what I need for startup after Waterfest this weekend.

    Wow! Sweet build!

I have a good suggestion for your fuel rail line as it protrudes and in addition would clean everything up. Is get the BBM Mk3 Billet FPR holder, and you cap one end of the rail. In addition you can bolt the BBM holder to the rail itself too so even less fittings and even more room on that end. You'll also toss that return line going across your intake manifold.

Im open to ideas but unsure of what you mean exactly, wouldn't I have to put an FPR in the BBM FPR holder?

I saw alot of people making overly elaborate mounts out of aluminum retaining the stock location mount with the single mounting point to the aluminum engine mount bracket in the B5, basically Audi B5 mounts don't look very appealing if your looking for strength. Using factory VR mounts gave me the option to swap between poly or delrin inserts, and it is a street car so it has poly inserts. Although all the credit goes to my friends Steve and Matt aka Pillagefab, they do alot of custom stuff for a small group of guys around here in CT. He also did an amazing job on the front mount. Oh and btw, this is one of my favorite parts on the car..

The linkage makes a huge difference, too. I suggest it. Been rocking the JHM trio on my car for a few years now (like right after they made them). It makes a huge difference on my 1.8T and 01A. I would conjecture it could do the same for the VR6 and 01E.

Oh right on dude! The shifter makes a huge difference I am excited to see more of this build.

The linkage really ties it all together and removes 90% of the slop out of the factory shifter components. The linkage should work just fine on the 01E

What the BBM FPR holder/adapter does is allow both your fuel and return lines to remain at one end on the rail at the back of the head:

    https://s-media-cache-ak0.pinimg.com...4c2dbaa789.jpg

Why this is fantastic is allows you to cap the radiator end of the rail and delete the return line (as you are getting overhand), as well you would throw in a fixed FPR regulator (or adjustable) and remove the unit from the false fire wall and clean up the bay even more. Just a thought ;).

    Keep up the great work!

Thanks everybody, I cannot wait to have this thing assembled. Few little issues I'm currently ironing out with the ABS, and a few odds and ends to button up. Also still working on the body, which is close, but a complete color change and repair of all dents, stripping the lower door and rocker molding, is just a bitch.

Awesome build! How did you mate the S4 transmission to the VR?

034 makes an adapater. I don't know if he used that one though.

That is indeed what I used for the adapter.

Still need to finish the bodywork at this point, also haven't really revved it higher than 55K, still isn't technically "tuned", but I'm sure its good where it's at.

    Runs strong for 15psi

Got the tune dialed in for 15PSI wastegate spring, and was able to really open her up lol.

next step is to really throw some boost at it lol.
