    AEB FrankenTurbo upgrade

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
Well I picked up a franken kits off craigslist for an amazing price that i couldnt pass up. Turbo, manifold, DV, turbo inlet pipe, franken maf, DV silicone hose and a throttle body spacer thats tapped for meth all for 750$. Im going out of town to work in a few days so i wont have time to install until the first of march, which will give me time to work out a few issues: first im thinking of just doing a k03 or k04 off the shelf tune for an AEB, any other suggestions?

    2. will my stock fuel pump be enough of should i throw an s4 pump in?

    3. I will be pulling the motor for this build to do some extra maintaince, clutch, control arm kit, fmic, evap delete, replace some warn hoses, wire tuck, power wash the engine/tranny and engine bay, motor mounts/tanny mounts, new alternator and fix anything else that my eye catches.

4.Car currently has 3in test pipe and exhaust so that doesnt need to be addressed.

So i guess im asking for any advise on things i have over looked? Need advise on the tune/ which route to go? Or any other tips with the motor pull/turbo swap?

*My car is a daily driver that takes weekend trips to the mountain to ski/ride. I have a b5 s4 that has a built motor/heads that is undergoing a single turbo swap that is my race car. My a4 just needs to be reliable with no issues but I want a little more power to help me pass people on the hwy. I wont be running the meth setup on this car.

I don't know if people know this but Maestro has a K04 tune for 440 injectors using the stock MAF that I'm sure could be scaled for the Franken. Then if you wish to change in the future, your tune is already there.

Good job on that kit, I saw that pop up and thought it was a slamming deal. Lucky...

For tuning, you want to contact Motoza pretty sure he is a national tuner, that is familiar with the FT turbo and he is located in Foco. Which makes it really convenient. I know he has driven to Denver to tune peoples cars and charges a decent rate. I advise researching and contacting them. http://www.motozaperformance.com/MotozaPS.html

are you going to bother with meth?

also, bigger injectors are a must to use this turbo to its potential.
as suggestion on vortex i would go with a unitedmotorsports tune with either 630 or 440cc injectors.
personally, i will be going with their 630 tune because ive already got the injectors.

also is it a f21 or f4h turbo?

Sorry forgot to mention that it is an f21 turbo. I'm not going to bother with meth on this car, I just need reliablity with this car so she runs another 100k with only some small issues. Will the stock pump be able to keep up with 630cc injectors or will I need a bigger one?

Fuel pump upgrades are always handy, or at the least when doing tune install check the rail pressure at WOT and full load. Better still throw a wideband gauge on. Its a must really for any decent turbo upgrade on the narrow band cars. It doesnt have the AFR protection built in like your S4 and this way you can keep an eye on it.

Its not the injector size that dictates the amount of fuel (and pump) required its what the tune asks of the injectors. Very likely you'll get away with a stock pump but if its old, and starts to drop flow? I wouldn't, no way unless it was fairly new AND I had Wideband monitoring

the Maestro file for 440cc file most definitely can be tweaked to run a FT, but as you probably dont wanna mess about with the A4 too much youll skip this route, unless you think you might change out hardware in the future, in which case the 2nd or 3rd.... tune is free

Just bought this set up myself, and had a great local shop suggest meastro 7. I've also heard nothing but good things about eurodyne in the past so I just purchased it.

Injectors... Bosh EV14 525cc injectors were also suggested. A newer, very efficient injector for this setup.

I will be installing my kit this week and also have started a thread to go with it. GL with your install. I will be following this thread.

can you give me some info on a head gasket and how to install? do most people install them to lower the compression and how is this accounted for in tuning?

Most people run a thicker hg to lower compression, others run a thinner hg to make compression higher. This is also done with a different crank, rod length and piston designing. The only reason I redid mine was because I was losing coolant somewhere through the exhaust. Head gasket seemed like the most logical culprit so that's what I did, hopefully it's fixed.

I sure hope not, once the plastic pulled out the valve sealed up like usual, it should be fine. The motor is all back together now, waiting on a throw out and pilot bearing before the trans and motor go back into place, hopefully this weekend.

Andyrew- how do you like your sb stage 4 setup? That's what I will be running on this car. I have a Tilton twin disk on my S so I imagine it would be much friendlier than that. Any likes dislikes?

You won't need that fuel pump. The stock pump can be used just fine. Save some $$ there :D

FT manifold is being used with lock tite and locking washers do to them coming loose after a period of time. The fuel pump had already been bought. I got a great deal on the pump, 034 coils and ICm delete and the racetec FMIC for 500$ so I can't go wrong. Plus the stock pump was starting to have issues so what the heck.

I had no luck with split locking washers, are they what you're using? And do you think loctite will hold up to the extreme heat?
Instead I use the 034 Motorsport K03/K04 locking tab and haven't had a SINGLE issue with bolts/studs loosening.

Good clutch, Really heavy though so it will take some time to get used to.

Do a leakdown test before you reinstall it. Clean the head up then put water in the valve area to as much as you can fit then wait for 30 minutes and see if its leaked out or not.

Head/valve checked out to be fine with no damage :). What kind of change will I notice from the new coils? My car has always ran fine, no misfires or anything like that. I'm just trying to eliminate a few know issues before they arise to keep my car running for another 100k.

Deleting the icm and going to the new coils, will be easier on the wallet, if the coils die. Smoother idling, run a larger plug gap.

As for the turbo to manifold bolts, I ended up purchasing some ARP stainless bolts, and using nord lock washers with them. ARP # 772-1010 stainless steel 12pt m10x1.5x80mm they come in a 5 pack.

Stock pump will be just fine, I've ran my stock pump up to the 400 CHP mark before I put my inline 255 Walboro in (28-30 PSI with a 60-1 T3/T4 (however it was at the ragged edge of it's limits))

The Frankenturbo pushes about 280 CHP so you'll be fine w the stock pump.

    AEB FrankenTurbo upgrade

What did you decide for your pump? Mine ('99 AEB Quattro) is beginning to fail.

EDIT: Just saw you used the Wahlbro 255. I was thinking I would use this, since it's the same price as the stock unit at ECS. Good Luck with your build. I would LOVE to go this route eventually.
