    Question on 4.2 engine harnesses

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
Is it possible to run an early (2004) D3 4.2 engine harness on a 2004 C5 4.2 swap project (ME7.1.1 ECU)? I'm looking to swap to the D3 valve covers, timing covers, fuel rail, intake, TB, etc. and run the press in coil packs on a 2002 S6 block. Looking for a plug and play solution. Any help appreciated.

I would doubt they are the same but may be similar. In order to determine the answer to this question you need to compare full engine wiring diagrams and connector views/locations between both cars.

It's possible the body plugs would be the same connectors. The difference will lie in the keyways for the connectors.

I'd go out on a limb and say the D3 A8 body plugs are going to be similar to the C5 RS6 plugs. (I have no experience with the RS6 harnesses).

I do know the 079 Chain engines definitely do have a different body plug keyways. Those require repinning

I suspect that even if re-pinning is required, the terminals will be the same or similar; Even if they aren't, all of the VAG terminals can be had and crimped on to a harness as necessary. If I were approaching a problem like this, I would print out all of the relevant wiring diagrams and connector views, and then sit down with a notebook and try to identify the differences before you start the harness swap, this will probably save you a lot of time.

Thanks for all of the replies, makes sense to sit down and work through the diagrams. I also have a ME 7.1.1 D2 S8 engine harness and am wondering if this would be an easier starting point?
