Failed thermo-pneumatic valve & water pump

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
Afternoon everyone and thanks for taking a minute to read the issues I’ve discovered. A scent of coolant in the engine bay has lead to an Indy mechanic discovering a failed water pump and thermo pneumatic valve. Additionally there is coolant in the vacuum lines. To be brief, I’m being quoted $6,700 to replace all of this. Does anyone here have experience with these issues? I’m unaware of a recall or anything else associated with this issue on my car (2019 S5 SB). See tag below for mods. Any insight or advice is greatly appreciated here!

You might be covered under the Extended Warranty associated with this - use the link to check if your VIN is eligible - if yes, time to give Audi America or your local Audi dealer a call to discuss options.

    https://www.canadianwaterpumpsettlement.ca/

FWIW though not applicable to you, but interesting to note that Audi Canada provided an Extended Warranty with 100% repair coverage, whereas the Audi USA Extended Warranty has a mileage related % coverage.

Glad my water pump got replaced at zero cost to me under the Canadian Extended Warranty back on 31-Mar-2024.

Very common issue but $6700 from an indy shop is quite high. That's what people have been quoted from the dealer, with indy shops coming closer to $3-4K. I'd be curious for a line-by-line breakdown on how they're getting to that number or shop around for another estimate. If you're mechanically inclined, it's DIY-able for about $600-800 in parts (excluding the vacuum line set which is around $600 by itself).

Thanks everyone for the feedback. IÂ’m gonna call my Audi dealer and see what they say about any extended coverage.

Pretty common issue, but as stated above $6700 from an Indy shop is very high, thats dealership pricing. The S4/S5's are not in the class action lawsuit, that is for the 2.0T engines.

Here is a LINK >> DIY replacement of coolant pump and details of the vacuum controls

The coolant pump vacuum control type of design is used accross many of the recent Audi engines; 1.2L, 2.0L, 2.9L, 3.0L, 4.0L. The pumps are different but they follow a similar control scheme.

    The 1.2L pump;

A quick anecdotal update: unknown to me is that I am still under an extended warranty with Audi! So, getting this done next week by my Audi dealership. Feels like Christmas all over! Cheers.

I wonder if it's worth preemptively changing the water pump at some point as a maintenance item since it is prone to failure?

I’d actually like to know the same. Also are the parts everyone is replacing this with revised to last longer? Or are we just planning on redoing it in 30-50k miles? I’m definitely looking for a one and done solution.

I don't think there are any revised parts. It is rinse and repeat.

I have 18' S5 with now 75k miles and had a small leak indy shop quoted me to replace coolant system which was around $3500~ but since it was small I just went with coolant flush its been fine for a few months now. Only issue I get is High Coolant warning when I start driving very calmly about once every other week, it goes away in a few mins and never comes on during harder drives (yet) but I know the coolant temp cant be too hot that quick , I hope its just a sensor acting up and until I can afford to replace this stuff I hope for the best :)

I have my car scheduled for to go in next week and I had the same questions about the replacement parts. From what I have learned it seems the seals are more prone to failure than the water pump. In either case, will ask Audi about it. One thing I did learn from my Indy shop was that you cannot order the seals separately from Audi, but you can from Porsche (same engine used in Porsche).

If you can, update us with what you find out from the dealership and possibly the part numbers where you can order the seals separately from Porsche, because maybe FCP has them and could do the lifetime warranty replacement for them every time you have to change them?

Here are the parts associated with the coolant pump replacement:
    N-101-243-06 bolt
    WHT-007-920 seal ring
    06M-121-115-N housing
    06M-121-013-D water pump
    06M-121-678-H valve
    G-12E-050-S0 coolant
    06M-131-055-FE hose
    N-108-325-01 bolt
    06M-121-437-E washer
    06M-133-026-A washer
    WHT-005-652-A seal ring

Hope this helps anyone else out there that may have to face this issue. I got lucky with the extended warranty and had I not poked around due to smelling coolant under the hood would have never realized this issue. No idiot lights came on and this issue showed evidence of being around for long enough to work its way into the vacuum lines and could see dried coolant at the solenoids...

I bought the car CPO, so I was thinking I was out of warranty but I had another 2 yrs and up to 100k mileage before the extended warranty was up. So, I fell into the extended range and my dealership handled it without question despite the list of aftermarket parts.

if it worries you that much, do it at 50k and make it worth your while, while the front bumper and everything else is off, throw in a bigger intercooler, euro e-code headlights, whatever, something else to make it worth your while.

who knows,,,,,,,that being said, its a leak that gets worse over time like every euro car, so you will certainly know when its time, low coolant warning or burning coolant smell, they don't usually fail catastrophically.

I wonder if everything would still function fine and not throw any codes if the vacuum line to the pump is no longer used just gets plugged off. I know it would take longer to warm up, but It would probably reduce wear on that seal since it would no longer move in the water pump and get rid of any chances of leaking into the vacuum system.

I think I will try that as well for a preventative measure.

Has anyone tried keeping the vacuum line disconnected from the water pump? Did it cause any issues, or make the car take a lot longer to warm-up? Doing this work next week and debating on trying this.

Anybody know if these parts are just being replaced with the same OEM units or is there an upgrade issued by Audi or aftermarket to make these more bulletproof?

Just OEM parts. I read there are different revisions but reliability is still the same; no real fix.

Replaced my Pressure controller and top solenoid myself and had a shop replace my thermostat, water pump, coolant shutoff valve, and coolant shutoff valve solenoid. Power feels better now. I ended up plugging the solenoid that controls the water pump and saw no codes or issues. Warm-up times seems barely impacted. Might be worthwhile to do.

My coolant shutoff valve was also leaking so both water pump and coolant shutoff valve failed for me. Im hoping it was just excess coolant that was sucked up through the water pump leaked down into the shutoff valve.

I read this coolant article from my local independent Audi shop that was interesting:
