When we were teenagers and into our 20’s, working on cars was fun and we learned a lot….what we did right and what we did wrong. Now at 72, not so much fun, but not ready to let this little A4 fade into the sunset. It is a 6 speed and so much fun to drive. Third gear full boost is the money gear! Before I finish this project, I’m sure some questions will come up for the knowledgeable members on this forum, so decided to just start this thread. Added a picture of the intake port….actually not as bad as I was expecting.
First question…can anyone tell me what that small black part is in the last two pictures? I found it laying beside the head as I was removing the valves. I cleaned it off.

I have had my 09 CAEB head apart alot modifying it for performance and i have never seen that part. The only part that i could possible think it could be is part of the cylinder head flaps that go inside on the intake side that slide into the head. Otherwise in my 15 yrs of dealing with these 2.0T engines i have never seen that part. Only thing you could do is if you have a Audi dealer close take the part over to them. Have you looked to see if there is a part number on it?

Yes, CAEB engine in 2010 A4. I am 99.9% sure it was somewhere on the head since I cleaned off my workbench and spread out a cleaned work towel. I could not find a part number and never recall ever seeing a similar A4 part. It isn’t a hard plastic…it does have a bit of flex. About four years ago, I replaced the timing and balance shaft chains, guides, and tensioners, but it is the first time I’ve had the head off. Audi replaced the pistons and rings (failed their oil consumption test) so possibly?? could have left (for lack of a better description) this pad behind lodged in one of the intake ports, but this is just a wild guess. It is too large to move down close to the backside of the valve and it was covered in gooey carbon similar to the intake runners. Kinda reminds me of one of the bumper pads you see on various cordless tools.

Yeah I've taken mine apart alot and never seen that part. So it's not anything major. You might be able to change out balance shafts and also change cam bridge it's crucial and there is a new revised version. Buy it from dealer and the first thing pop out screen. You don't need it and its what starts engine problems. It's not gonna hurt anything believe me. I've watched techs do it on YouTube. If you wanna know anything about pulling apart and how to reinstall it look up HumbleMechanic. Your gonna need timing tool kit to hold the cams and he will show you how to measure everything. Need any other info let us know someone is always here to help.

Appreciate the comments. I will certainly ask if I come up on any other issues. I do have and am using the timing tool kit-left over from when I replaced the timing chain kit purchased from FCP euro. Yes, I’ve watched a lot of HumbleMexhanic’s YouTube videos. Very informative. Also have watched a lot of NaptownTuner. I’ve often found myself hours later still watching some of their videos.
