    XS Power turbos??

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
I've recently been getting all the parts to take my Stage 2 B5s4 to the full stage 3 after the clutch went out. The last thing I need to get is my turbo setup before I finish pulling the engine and can get the car running again. I got a surprisingly good review from my friend of the xs power k04 turbos from his build and figured I might get some for myself. The two pairs that I am deciding between are the k04 replicas and the k04 XL's (Both are linked at bottom). Does anyone know the major differences in power potential and reliability??

Yes, I know that I can rely on cheap turbos to run forever, but I just need a solid setup for now until I save the money for some higher quality k24s or Borg Warners. I mostly want to know what turbo will be the best for my stage 3 car.

I'll update the thread too when I finish the project, and give my opinion on the economy turbos.

I would find a blown set of real K04s and put new CHRAs in them before buying either of those. Nearly all Chinese turbos have some sort of wastegate issues after a short while, so better to start with an BW set. You can find them blown for well under 1k. You can also usually find a set of K24s or similar for around $1k. I sold mine for 1400 with basically brand new CHRAs, tial wastegates, and custom AN lines I made for them. All better options than XS power turbos IMO.

Why would you want to potentially do things 2 x? Or potentially ruin other areas of the engine?

Upgrading the turbos should not make the car less potentially reliable. If it's worth doing, it is worth doing correctly, the first time.

This is who you're wanting to buy turbos from (from their site) "THE ONLY LARGER IS THE K24 RS6
    THESE ARE THE WHAMMA JAMMAS
    2021 BALLERS"

CELison is 100% right. You could toss new CHRA's into whatever housings, and end up with something actually proven time and time again, for 25 years.

Buying a set for $1000, only to then buy another set down the road, doesn't make much sense to me. But, ymmv.

You'll also need: new oil feed and return lines, ideally, new coolant feed and return lines, gaskets, hardware, inlets, injectors, fuel pump (and potentially wiring/relay/hat depending on pump choice), intercoolers, MAF housing, and a few other odds and ends.

If you’re not building an engine, skip K24. Would be utterly useless imho, and needs even more supporting parts to work successfully. BW does not directly make a bolt on K24 option. They make 1 option themselves: K04s. Anything else requires modified housings in one way, shape or form, and use of varying wheels from Chinese whatever to genuine BW parts.

The K04 is a reliable, bolt on tried and true setup for an otherwise stock engine, whether you’re on pump or E85. It’s not by accident.

Thanks for the advice, I did some more research and figured I don't want to build by engine till summer and should stick to k04s right now. I got a pretty good deal through b5 supply and bought a set of SEP Billet K04s (linked at bottom). As far as I could find, SEP is a solid manufacturer and I'm putting my trust in them. If something were to go wrong there is a 1 year warranty so I am not way too worried. Now I am just looking to get a solid clutch and flywheel setup under $1500. I set up a glowshift wideband gauge a while back, but the gauge wasnt showing any power so I need to figure that out too. This whole projects gotten pretty expensive for me being in highschool and balancing costs and quality can be challenging.

SEP is hit or miss and it’s the same Chinese turbos people mentioned above.

I may have a clutch setup within your price range. It’s used but I went with Tilton triple disc so no use for the clutch that I pulled out. It’s Southbend setup. PM if interested. I may have other shit as I’m starting to get rid of things.

They aren’t manufacturing turbos. Not sure what research you’re doing tbh.

A normal B5 RS4 clutch is fine for K04s. They are around $400. No flywheel option is needed

If budget is that much of an issue, tbh, focus on maintaining it and leave it otherwise alone.

I ended up getting a set of used turbos that needed a refurb and got a set of billet comp wheel uprated CHRAs from Enhanced Turbo along with a set of 10 PSI actuators from them. I believe ETSpec supplies these items in the US.

Some of the Chinese turbo CHRAs are ok. In my experience it's the wastegates that suck. FH4s, F21s, K24s. All had some sort of wastegate issue. Hence why it makes sense to get a BW housing and put new CHRAs in. You got your turbos from Medina, and he's a nice kid, but don't ask him to count past 10 our recite all 26 letters of the alphabet. Since you already bought them, my advice would be to put some good wastegate actuators on them, or else you'll be under the car adjusting preload constantly. Good luck, I had my b5 when I was 18 too, so I understand money being a struggle. I ate lettuce for like a month to buy a boost gauge my freshmen year of college.

SEP advertised making their turbo parts in house and I saw on some other threads people said SEP was trustworthy. If the case is that they are chinese, then I'll just go get some actuators and hope for the best. If an Rs4 clutch will hold up with the k04s then I may go that route for now.

They assemble them in house maybe, but not actually manufacture. People have had good luck with them, since you're on a budget I think that was a good move. But yeah, Tial, turbosmart, ect wastegate actuators will keep you from having to mess with them. I used Tial mvi actuators then made my own -3AN lines to the N75.

I used that same waste gates. I also made my own lines but I just did clamps with heat shielding.
