    Coolant temperature too high-Engine overheating

Hey everyone, trying to make sense of what is going on with my ‘19 RS5. I’ve only owned the car two months and currently have 35,9xx miles on the vehicle so I’m fairly new to the platform. About a week ago during my commute the vehicle started beeping and gave me the coolant temperature too high warning followed by fluctuating engine temperatures the rest of the drive. Made it to my destination and had the car towed to an European specialist shop I’ve used in the past with other vehicles. They diagnosed the problem as the thermostat and when asked they did not recommend changing the water pump as it was operating properly. A few thousand dollars later the vehicle acted fine for a day and back to the same symptoms. I drove the car back to the shop, planned on monitoring temps on the way there and towing the car if it overheated. Well, the vehicle made it to the shop about a 35 minute drive with absolutely no issues. The mechanic drove it for 6-8 miles and the car operated as normal. They diagnosed a coolant air pocket and everything should be good from there on. During my commute home yesterday the car overheated again(shop was closed at this time). I’m at a loss on how to proceed. Any advice? Thanks for reading and responses in advance.

Sounds like water pump. Check the vacuum line from the water pump

    HI WWHAN,

Could this also occur in an RS6? i have a 2021 rs6 and am having a similar issue where it does not get fixed and continues to go through the "Coolant Temperature too High" warning where it requests that I let the engine run while vehicle is stationary. also it happens when I just start the engine about 1-2 miles out so the engine is cool from not having been used for a workday. Its driving me nuts and the car has been at the dealership several times and now over a week.

    thanks!
    Eddy

The shop should have just replaced the water pump while they were there doing the t-stat. You will need to replace it in the next 10-20k miles anyway and its a $230 part. You may want to try another shop who specializes in VW/Audi

Maybe, IF the pump has a similar vacuum controlled design , but the 2021 RS6 4.0L V8 has a different pump. The 2021 Audi RS6 Avant Water Pump - Audi (0P2-121-014-H) https://audi.oempartsonline.com/oem-...pump-p2121014h

The V6 engine vacuum controlled design water pump is similar to what is used on the smaller engines also, including the 1.3L engine.

The pump that often fails seems to fit most of the recent Audi model V6 engines. Water Pump - Audi (06M-121-013-D)

Well, it appears a similar strategy is used for the 4.0L C8 V8 engines.
