I have a 2017 Q7 3.0T with 72,000 miles and a MaxCare extended warranty that expires in December. The car is burning 1 quart of oil every 500 miles, and I had the PCV valve replaced 2 weeks ago, but no improvement. My trusted mechanic says the next step is an engine replacement that MaxCare would cover but only for a used engine. It would take 3-4 weeks.
Here are my options:
- Sell now CarMax quoted me $14,000.
- Replace the engine MaxCare will cover up to $33.5k with a $450 deductible, but itll be a used engine.
- Take it to the dealership and see what they say, covered under the same warranty terms.
Im worried about making sure this gets done before the warranty runs out and whether I can get a few more years out of the car after the engine swap. Based on the forums, Im also concerned that the engine design flaw might cause the issue to come back, leaving me with expensive repairs once the warranty is gone.
If youve had the engine replaced or dealt with this issue, what would you do? Im really torn and could use your insights.
Here's what I'm struggling with: Would you replace the engine or sell it now? And if you were to get the work done, would you do it through the dealership where I'd be starting from zero or with the independent mechanic?
Thanks so much for your help!
