C5 S6 windshield no longer available per AAA insurance, Safelite and Glass America

Tried getting mine replaced, but settled for just a repair. Have others been able to replace their C5 S6 windshields? Is it different than other C5 models?

    Thanks,
    -Jeff

    Thanks,
I'm in the same boat. There are so many stories of high dollar replacements that aren't correct fitment and are causing water leaks. I caught a rock chip right by the right A pillar that turned into a Crack. Shame is, I've got my A pillars wrapped in PPF

Yes, it’s different. I believe it’s longer and goes down into the cowl area further, or something along those lines. The S and RS are a little longer than an A6 or Allroad in the nose.
I’ve heard it called the most difficult to source windshield in the US and I bet they’re few and far between anymore. There were what, 1400 S6’s brought over or something like that.
I’d honestly be a little weary of anything advertised as new, too. Unfortunately I am no help and know of no solutions.

    Source?

I have been operating under the belief that the following is all true, regarding C5 unibody variants sold in the US:

There are two sedan bodies, a wide body for the 4.2 V8 cars, and a narrow body for the rest of the A6 sedans.

The Allroad and the A6 avant are both "narrow" variants that share parts (or at least interchange) with the narrow sedan, aside from the wagon-specific body parts like the hatch, obviously. The Allroad unibody is unique, having mounting tabs for the rear wheel flares and also being reinforced in a few different places. Out of all C5s, the Allroad was the only narrow body that came with a V8.

The A6 4.2 sedan, I think, is dimensionally the same as the S6 and RS6 sedans.

In summary, I would be surprised to learn that the A6 4.2 windshield doesn't fit the S6 or RS6. The A6 4.2 cars do show up at LKQ every so often, but nobody ever needs any parts from them when I ask.

EDIT: Of course there are also "facelift" differences. The Allroad body parts only fit the PRE-facelift A6 sedans, such as mine.

Shelby, and Russia, and fellow enthusiasts. Caddylack, I don’t believe you’re wrong in any of your statements, but some things still aren’t transferable, in my understanding.

Here are some part numbers, although there are multiple different windscreen options as far as tint and UV protection goes, but I believe the ending letters determine that much like interior color schemes.

    02 A6 Saloon V8 - 4B4845099AE
    02 S6 Avant - 4B6845099AE

    03 RS6 Saloon - 4B4845099AE
    03 RS6 Avant - 4B6845099AE

You can see that the Saloon versions are interchangeable, and the Avants are interchangeable, but the Avant versions and Saloons are not. So, we can source an RS6 windscreen from a wide body V8 A6, but the Avant has a different part number specific to the Avants. We obviously didn’t get the RS6 Avant in the C5 models. I was planning on listing more variants to really see what they all had, but the website will only let me look at two different models a day now. Womp.

    03 Allroad - 4Z7845099AA
    03 A6 Saloon - 4B5845099BH
    03 A6 Avant - 4Z7845099AA

    Good post.

I think it might be worth comparing side by side. There is a clearly some difference between the avant and sedan windshields, but I’m putting Allroad fenders on my A6. You catch my drift.

Speaking of 4.2 V8 cars, you can buy an entire car for $550:

    It even has sport seats.

You might consider one of the companies that makes custom auto glass to order. Just google it and maybe you can find somebody near you.

Edited and added Allroad and A6 Avants.

Caddylack, I do pickup what you’re putting down, but with the windscreen and potential water damage that will potentially total a rare C5 I just wouldn’t chance it. Unless I had more proof it was successful.

dang, what a bummer. my windshield is pitted in such a bad way that I can barely see out when driving into the sun in mornings and evenings. Not sure if any repair method can handle several hundred tiny pits over the entire windshield.

FWIW- you absolutely CAN swap the V8 sedan and S6 windshields. They are exactly the same size, it's the same car from the B-pillar forward, but the S6 version is maybe a tiny fraction of a mm thicker- or as Audi called it 'insulated' . That's why the different part #.

You can put a narrow body car (sedan OR Avant/ Allroad) windshield into a wide body car, but you need the plastic parts that cover the wipers/ wiper motor and attach the 'cowl' and rain tray cover. With that stuff it WILL FIT, you'd never know the difference. And you can just install teh glass, but you'll have a gap in the plastic stuff below the windshield- honestly you could probably fill that gap with some trim or something. ( ?? like this? https://a.co/d/9AZBCeI

    That's it all wrapped up.

So I’m not completely full of shit, but my reasoning missed the mark. The plastics are different, not the windscreen itself.

So you’ve got to replace all the cowl plastics? Even the part the main cowl plastic slips into under the windscreen or just the main cowl cover piece?

The plastic is different because the glass on the widebody is 3/4" longer. So, use the plastic parts that go with whatever glass you have. If you put a narrow body windshield in a widebody car, get the narrow body plastic cowl stuff.

So it’s the narrow body vs wide body and the windscreen is in fact longer. Thanks Rollertron for setting me straight.

FYI you want to get the windshield from trival glass company, I had the other brand listed and fortunately that one had a scratch and also the blacked out edges was not wide enough. This allowed the inside trim to be seen.

Thank you, and nice seats! Just noticed you're in CT (me too, in Hartford area). Where did you source this glass and is your AR a 4.2?

Thanks, they’re recaro toplines. I’m down in Trumbull area and had Portland Glass install the windshield. They did a great job. It’s a free install with glass coverage. And CT is no repair state so that chip you have there should net a replacement.

I just replaced the glass on my C5. Ended up with the Trival as well. Seems decent so far.
