Best tune these days? 2013 A4

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
I apologize for a question as old as time. I've got a 2013 A4, with an APR stage 1 tune. I love the OBDII module where I can switch to "stock" tune and see data, etc.

I've had this tune for like 10 years, and have never researched any other options... What's good in 2024? I'm looking for safe tunes, comparable to what I have now, as I plan on keeping the car indefinitely!

Are there OBDII dongles I can use with these other options as well? Thanks in advance!

based on peoples data and dynos ect Apr makes the least amount of power. Jhm and 034 are the ones the make the most power.

The best tune you can get is WPT. Nothing else comes close.

For out of the box tune, and the only one I have ever had, I have been happy with Integrated Engineering's Stage 1 tune. I will be doing Stage 2 this week. I am sure WPT is better, but IE suits me.

I wouldn’t use a tune that neuters the flex fuel capabilities, very few support this, if you’re running a B8.5 with the ZF8, this is you.

Straight to Integrated Engineering's Stage 2 tune for a number years now on a B8.5 MY 2013 with metal intake. Air intake only. Might not make the advertised HP with the "recommended" intercooler, exhaust etc, but it pulls HARD. No issues with anything. Replaced all the replaceables. (DV valve, PCV valve etc) No wastegate rattle and at 92k miles now, (installed at 60K miles). Don't drive it hard all the time, but zero issues with emissions, gas mileage or drivability. Bit concerned with the timing chain at this mileage but when idling, sometimes can't even tell the car is running it's so smooth. With all the info on timing chain and model year\build date\etc, I wanna say I have the update timing chain tensioner, but can't fully confirm. Minus spending $$$ to geta vag-com, (using Carista) anyway to confirm via engine build\date\etc timing chain tensioner version? Can't say I wanna spend the $$$ to update a tensioner on a 10yr old car with almost 100k miles. I'm always suspect of shops ripping apart a 100k mile car to do a big maintenance job. What's everyone's thoughts?

    Start your own thread.

You’ll need a timing service between 90-120k, or don’t and then start a thread when it blows up.

This is who I am using. A custom tune will always be better than a can generic tune. Every car is different even with the same mods.

I hear the APR tune isn't the best, and 034 specifically says their tune doesn't work with a B8.5. I'm not familiar with WPT. Is that an in shop tune? It seems like my only option for a "plug and play" tune is IE? Any others out there I'm missing.

For an emissions complaint stock turbo OTS tune APR is hard to beat, IE would never be a choice

WPT is a one man show. He creates custom tunes and is a good choice for those who have a K04 or bigger turbo. For a stock turbo vehicle, IE is a good choice and offers the ability to flash from home.

The answer to OP's question is completely subjective, and depends on what the individual person is looking for in a tune. There s no "best" tune.

Do you want to push your OEM turbo or fueling to it's limit's? There's a tuner for that.
Do you want increased power that's safe for OEM hardware with longevity in mind? There's a tuner for that.
Do you have a custom turbo and fueling application that needs a highly customized approach? There's a tuner for that.
Do you want flex-fuel compatibility out of the box? There's a tuner for that.
Do you want a safe OTS tune with the backing of a large support staff for peace of mind? There's a tuner for that.

    etc, etc.

I get, I think, why some go IE, it has stg2 support (hfc) and flash at home. This will be a non starter for some that need to run the OE catalyst to pass emissions. Additionally, the problem is the lack of E85 support, APR’s stg1 with E85 will outperform most stg2 on 100oct. Idk why you would choose a tune that neuters the factory flex fuel capability.

Facts. All of these tunes are around 10 years old! Why buy old and outdated tunes when you can get a custom to your car tune, from safe and mild to wild. Use any fuel you want, E30, E40, E50, full E85, or flex fuel, you can have tune maps for all of them. There's literally no limit with WPT.

No need to apologise—this is definitely one of those timeless questions! Your APR Stage 1 tune has served you well, but in 2024, there are a few solid alternatives worth considering. Integrated Engineering (IE) and 034 Motorsport both offer reliable, safe tunes that deliver performance without compromising longevity. Many of these can be flashed via OBDII using their own dongles, so you won’t lose the convenience you’re used to. Also, customisation is key—just like creating unique ringtones that reflect your personality, making your device truly yours. You might enjoy this tattoo by loreen mp3 ringtone download if you're into personalising your sound. Hope this helps—happy driving!

if not going custom then i would go with ie, 034, or apr really your preference and best deal you can get on a flash at home (think apr now offers???) i would not buy a tune that you have to take to a tuner to get flashed if not going custom. And yes i am biased i believe WPT has best custom tune. Also IE customer service is thousand times better than APR, cant say for 034 as i have not used one of their tunes but their cs cant be worse than APR. Boils down to what you want to do, if you want to get the most out of your car go custom. If you just want to improve performance then any of the OTS stage 2 tunes is way to go, dont waste time and money going stage 1 you will only end up upgrading later might as while just go straight to stg 2.
