Where do I go from here I have a Unitronic Stage 1 tune and an IE intake at present. I wanted the car to still be a bit faster. What would you do next?? Do I go Stage 2 with a down pipe? Do I do a diverter valve and a turbo muffler? Just totally lost. The car is running a single pipe exhaust out the back. Would a switch to duals help? What is the cheapest way!!! Help!!!!!

Yes. Installing a test-pipe or HFC (not a full downpipe) and upgrading your tune will be the most cost effective path for power you have now. Depending on climate, I would seriously recommend installing intercooler upgrade, though it won’t feel as dramatic as ditching the factory cat.

However, this is illegal in most parts, even with a new aftermarket cat, so it comes with caveats and complications. Many do it and simply don’t get caught or revert stock for every inspection.

Diverter or T-muff-del won’t gain any pedal feel or seat-of-the-pants difference at all. Neither will going from single to dual exhaust, unless you’re doing a full turbo-back combo system in prep to go More than stage 2 later.

A pedal “booster” style box will zip up that throttle curve and make the car feel more responsive than it is, but they have their drawbacks. Maybe try one if you can borrow or return it.

I'm sure the upgrades to my 2010 A5 were more than 15k, but it was "sport" "fun."
I love the car but if doing it again I'd find an S5 with a 3.0T.

If your A5 is paid for maybe, but just buy an S5 3.0T

    K04 $1,400
Matching IE software upgrade for OP $200
Intake only adds woosh, not power at this level.
HFC (don’t need whole downpipe) $400
Cooling (you mean an FMIC?) $5-900
Exhaust also not needed for K04 on a budget.

I’m sorry that you overpurchased for the power you got out of your B8, A6sport, but my list is well under $3k, (though I would mentally add about an extra thousand bucks at least for “while I’m in there” sort of stuff) not the doomsayer $15 grand you are referring to. Maintenance issues not withstanding, obvs.

    {I will reiterate the many posts here and other places warning of a rough time using IE software on a CTS Turbo-branded K04 specifically (model TR-1070).}

Ok I can do a stage 2 upgrade and probably an intake. So you are saying a new Hi Flo cat over a downpipe would be better or less of an issue to change in the driveway?? Just don’t want to be laying in my. Ack for too long. I think I got a few decades on you guys!!!

Intake will be $3-400 spent on noise rather than power. JHM moved their TD05 big turbo kit from the shop B7 A4 to their new shop B8.5 allroad and went 115mph in the quarter mile. Is the intake holding that car back? eh, maybe some. Point being: it’s not a major restriction and when constrained by funds it’s best skipped.

Unless you want more wooshy noises. Then I completely understand and take it all back.

The $7-900 downpipes (like APR, IE, Unitronic) that have a cat in them open up a bit more of the exhaust but you are still restricted after that, so it seems pointless to me. The high-flow cats only are the ones that are shorter and cost closer to $3-400 (034, JHM, CTS, HPA) and these are more critical for flow/power.

HFC only is a slightly faster driveway install but neither are too tedious. You can find Dan_Q’s DIY write up on it here in the tech archives.

“Labor costs” for me include foot massages for wifey so she’ll watch kiddo all day whilst I sweat away in the garage on a weekend, LoL.

Turbo, FMIC, cat, cable and tune for under $4k.

Save another $500 by going with CTS brand K04 & cat instead of JHM. Just add an air filter, an oil & plug change and some coolant. Your quote doesn’t seem outrageous for a decent shop, depending what parts they’re picking.
