Rear lid ctr. lock. sys motor Fault Code 01699 Avant Tailgate

Solve one problem, another arises. The Audi Way.

At any rate, my 2011 Avant was working just fine. The hatch would open with the fob and with the door switch. Then all of a sudden, i couldn't open it electrically in any fashion. Have to crawl into the trunk and open it manually. The alarm still arms so its not a microswitch on the hatch or anything. I assume that this is just a coincidence that I was farting around in the BCM2 solving my alarm horn issue and now this fault occurred. Looking for this code on the interwebz does not yield much.

    Here is the error code.

Would it be wise to trace or test the Green/Black wire in the bottom right of the diagram above? I have seen that wire in there where you do the manual unlocking. Better yet, can I apply 12v somewhere to see if the lock is functional?

Can you hear the striker latch engaging/disengaging when you press the opening buttons? That's the bit on the boot base that opens/closes on the boot lock. Apparently they are prone to failing.

So you are referring to the part attached to the bumper, not the tailgate, right? I hear tons of relays clicking in the right corner but I don't hear the striker latch.

I did find this for cheap, if this is indeed the part I should replace.

Does the striker actually move? To me, it looks like the only part that has movement is the part I posted above, 8K9827505.

You have several items at play in that area.

The V382 rear lid closing assist motor and the F332 and F333 contact switches are in the vehicle body. This is the motor you hear pull the rear lid down after it latches closed.

E406 is the close button on the rear lid interior.

F248 is the open button on the rear lid exterior.

The V53 rear lid central locking motor and F124 contact switch are in the rear lid. This is the motor that unlatches the rear lid from the metal loop mounted to the body.

The DTC appears to be directly referencing the V53. The V53+F124 "rear lid lock" is the p/n 8K9827505A. This is also the object to which the manual release "cord" is attached.

Unclear how the pins are numbered on the connector. Wires to the rear lid pass through the right side hinge. As such, they are on the right side interior harness diagram. Looks like it's going to be connector 3B0972722.

    1 > green/yellow to J393 gray-32 pin 4
    2 > green/black to J393 gray-32 pin 8
    3 > brown to ground
    4 > green/red to J393 black-17 pin 5

On the sedan, it's green/yellow > F124 > brown and green/red > V53 > ground. It's unclear how the green/black plays in for the avant. But assuming the green/red is the same motor driver wire, I measure 77 kΩ from black-17 pin 5 to ground (ground lug right below the J393). The gray-32 has that cover over it, so can't backprobe those pins. I tried reading voltage when doing the unlock; I assume it's too brief for the meter to register. Or maybe it doesn't take that much voltage to cycle the latch.

I see now! That makes lots of sense. Smac's video illustrated it perfectly. I assume that if I press that plate down and lock the latch in the gate, it will actuate that latch in some manner.

Not sure what's with the sidetrack about the closing assist motor. The DTC screenshot is obviously referring to the lid locking motor in the rear lid itself. So the three J393 wires I referenced should be the focus.

As for the "striker plate" vs "striker plate with motor for power latch", it depends on your 4E_ PR code. 4E0 and 4E2 are just striker plate; 4E9 is striker plate with motor. From my vehicle data sheet:

4E9 Luggage compartment lid, opened and closed electrically

The power lift/close motors are only for 4E9.

4E0 Tailgate/trunk lid unlocking from outside
4E2 Tailgate/trunk lid release from inside (electrically)
4E9 Tailgate/trunk lid power closing with operation from inside

Ok, so 4E0 means you can only open it at the rear lid, like a door in house. 4E2 gets you the electrically connected locking motor so you "pop it" from afar. 4E9 is the real deal, fully power opening (local or remote initiate) and power closing (rear lid button initiate; but there's that plugin module that will enable remote initiate).

Looking at the order guide, yeah, only Prestige trim got 4E9.

Anyway, none of that is relevant to the error condition.
