Exclamation Replaced oil pump but oil not making it to cylinder head

    Interesting situation here.

Just got done replacing oil pump, chain, tensioner, oil pickup tube, cam chains in the back, oil filter housing/oil cooler gaskets after encountering low oil pressure. After doing the change, the pressure is now reading within specs (around 60psi cold, hovers around 30-40psi at operating temperatures) however there appears to be no oil making it to the cylinder head. I can hear valve ticking and when I removed the valve cover, the cams were nearly bone dry.

I did some searching on this and various forums and am not sure what the culprit might be. When I checked the oil passages there wasn't any obstructions that I could see. I have been searching and I haven't been able to find any oil relief valves that could be causing the issue (looking through the various diagrams) ONE thing that comes to mind is the oil filter housing which, while I was viewing it, one of the two valves(?) was stuck closed as much as I tried to push it. Maybe that could be the issue, not sure.

Anything else I should be checking? Did a decent amount of work on this car and I'm not ready to give up yet.

30-40 psi at operating temps at idle is waaaay high from what we normally see on these cars . if that is what you are seeing.

yes the OFH has been an issue in the past as we have seen some completely blown out on the inside.. but not sure if that is your specific issue, but a good place to start.

the B8s have a return valve pressed into the head that sometimes gets jammed, not sure if B7 has this,, but i dont think so , others will chime in.

I'm probably tripping from my memory then. Will run the test again to verify this when the part for my busted fuel pressure sensor comes in.

In that case then, I'll take it out again and do a closer inspection.

Yeah I kept finding this specific return valve but looking through every diagram on the internet and ALLDATA I can't find any other valve. Hopefully someone else has more information on this.

i just checked the internet looking for a pic of the bottom side of the head.. fortunately i found one and there is no press fit valve like the B8 which is good as that was a very bad idea.
Personally at the rate those OFH leak i would just fire in a new OE one if you have done all that work.

here is a link to my oil pressure thread for this platform.

Yeah, 30-40psi is way high, of up yo temp.
Is the valveyrain super loud? If there is GT any oil making it to the head, it would be toast by now.
I don't know the oil path, so can't really help as to why your wouldnt be getting oil(or much) up top.

Yeah the valve train is extremely loud here's a sound bite:

    It sounds like a jackhammer/clattering.

Looking under the valve cover yesterday, there's SOME oil making it it to the cylinder head as I see fresh oil in the cylinder head bolts. Fuel pump part arrived. Will get some oil pressure results later today...

Maybe its normal ?? these things do sound like diesels. lol

the two noisiest parts of this engine so far i have found are.
    1. loose Vacuum pump fitting that foes to brake booster .. rattles like crazy and makes noise.
    2. rear chain tensioner. I had no idea it was abnormal till i changed it and noticed how much quieter the engine got.

I also just had my existential thought of the day .... can something be visibly quieter ??? lol . i almost typed that ..

Yeah, the readings I saw was correct. The readings sits at like 3 bars and then now the car started missfiring like like crazy guess I didn't run it long enough. I also got a surprise right under the OFH and the cap.

FYI: Before anyone says it's probably a head gasket issue just so you know I change the gasket twice.

Yeah... I'm unsure what it could be now. I replaced the OFH/cooler and made sure to torque everything to spec and yet I'm still having the same issue (coolant and oil is mixing and leaking out the side of the engine. Might as well bring it to a Indy shop at this point...

when i had that it was the water pump leaking running down the front of the engine and under the oil pan and mixing with my leaking OFH oil making the milkshake.. new it was time for some Preventative maintenance... lol

Yep it's official, something is wonky with the cylinder head or motor. Brought it to a mechanic and they said one of the cylinders are leaking (bent valve probably after a screw fell into the intake manifold) and he verified that there's barely any oil making it to the cylinder head and the cam chain snapped again (while driving from the mechanic which was legit around the corner) Time to pull the whole engine apart and possibly rebuild!

I'd really consider how much money I want to sink into this car. mechanic bills and parts costs will rack up quick

You can say that again. Luckily this isn't my primary car and is just a project car I want to challenge myself with but I am still contemplating scraping this car.
