    DRL out

Hi all, the car is a:2017 S3. Just got the message that the right side front DRL is out. I am used to just replacing the burnt out bulb.

So it’s LED strip. The blinker works on the same bar as the DRL, it’s yellow of course as the DRL is white. Looking for the op path to take in repair. I will not being doing the work. I was quoted $3,000 for a whole replacement part. Part only I think. I understand that there are 3 or 4 modules that could contain the failure. Swapping the modules out to see which ha failed. Might include using the other side assembly to check. $440 to try and source down the bad part. Modules go for $400. I am thinking that one of two problems, first off the LED’s white color could have failed. The blinker in yellow works so we know the strip is ok. Secondly a bad module, and there are 3 or 4.

Does anyone have knowledge of this problem. I don’t pretend to understand or even have the correct information. How would one troubleshoot this? What steps have others taken?

Thanks for any information. Btw the wife says to live without the fix. Being just a running light.

Have you tried running a scan with VCDS? If you can’t get to the source (which I doubt) of the failure, I’d just go into the MMI and turn off the DRLs and just have them off completely. Not worth dishing out $3,000.00 for that type of repair. Come to worse you could hit up a salvage yard to grab the failed module once you run that VCDS scan.

I was told the scan won’t pin point the problem, I asked. Still have to find the bad module by trail and error. Not a bad I idea turning off the DRL completely. Having one side on and the other off doesn’t sit well with my ocd….

    Thanks for responding

So after doing more homework I turned off the DRL’s via the MMI. No reader needed. Vehicle-outside lights- turn off DRL.

I can live with it. Still though interested in procedure in troubleshooting.

Fearing this problem is the main reason that I had turned off my DRL, trying to preserve it. Those LED will still turn on when the headlights are on, so turning it off via MMI will still show a dead strip when your headlights are on. If the bad LED is on the top strip, then the module is relatively "easy" to replace. See this video for more info => https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=W3efYI4qw-M

Thanks for the video, I had come across it previously. Understood with lights on the top strip is still dead. Still on the fence. I got ride of the code lights by turning ignition on for 3 seconds then off and on again briefly. Upon starting again the warnings were absent.

So the shop troubleshoot the DRL. After swapping parts etc the headlight housing needs to be replaced. I was hoping for a module unit fault, no such luck. Not sure what failed in the sealed assembly housing. $440 to find out I need to spend another $3200. Not going there. Gues I turmmthe DRL’s off via MMI. I can clear the two warnings on the dash but they come back on each ignition being turned on. They didn’t want to try to track down the code to permanently delete. Or did ai want to chase that rabbit with more $$. $3700 just craz for a DRL being out. Blinker still functions. They weren’t excited about going used, so I didn't push it.

Miss the simple bulb fix in my muscle cars back in the day.

    Thanks for the help

Damn, bro’, that’s definitely a nice amount of change just to get a DRL back up. I’d definitely go with a used one and just get things squared away via that route. Definitely not cheap on this end but I’m totally not spending such an amount on that. Personally, I’d shut that other side down via the MMI and toss that $3,700.00 toward a family trip to Hawaii!

Bummer. I, too hate that almost all, if not all of the newer cars that have these LED lights, especially DRLs which will eventually fail. Instead of a $1 bulb, we are faced with a $3k to $4k light assembly. The same goes for the tail lights! I guessed everyone is making throw-away cars now when anything that fails will make it out cost the value of the vehicle and makes you scrap the car. Planned obsolescence?

I have listened. I figure after the $440 to find the problem it isn’t worth it for me to go any further. Just shut off the other side. Headlights for sale cheap for a reason.
