Does the fuel cap normally click?

I recently bought a used 2012 A6, and a CEL appeared shortly after with code P0456 for a small EVAP leak.

In the course of checking everything that would normally cause the fault, I was checking the fuel cap and realized that although it states "Tighten Until One Click", mine never actually "clicks", it just stops turning and then sort of springs back 1/8 of a turn or so. It feels tight and I had never given it any thought until now, so the question I am wondering is, does this fuel cap normally "click" or is what I have described the normal function of this cap?

I would love if I could resolve this code with a new fuel cap, but don't to waste $60 if the cap I have is fine. Thanks!

They don’t click like the old ones but the cap gasket might be an issue.

Mine clicks once I believe; agree with the gasket probably being the issue.

Turn it until it "clicks". It kinda has a position like an ignition switch does. Closed and then CLOSED with a partial click.

Thanks. That’s a perfect description of how mine is. So it seems that is it’s normal function.

Absolutely. Yeah it sounds normal. I would check the seal on the cap to see how it looks. Other than that, a smoke test is really the only way to narrow it down . If you have a big boy scanner you can do a purge and seal test to see if the tank holds pressure. If it doesn't, you likely have either a bad cap or a stuck open purge valve or Leak detection pump leak.

Clean the sealing area of the cap and filler neck and see if that makes it go away. If not then probably a new cap is needed.

You can get a cap off Amazon for under $20.
