    Center diff removal

I got a spare center diff and I’m trying to take it out of the housing to weld it but I can’t figure out how to get it out. I took out the snap ring and black plug and took the part that connects to the driveshaft out.

Did you remove the snap ring inside the hole that was plugged? It’s surrounding the output shaft and won’t allow it to come out of the trans. If you did remove it, it may just be tight and need some persuasion. The inside snap ring will need to be expanded as you pull the output shaft out.

Yea I took the inside snap ring out, I tried tapping it out with a socket and extension but stopped because I didn’t want to damage anything

Sorry tapping it out with a socket? The only thing that will fit in the hole to remove the snap ring is a 90 degree expanding snap ring pliers. Can you take a picture of where you are stuck at? I just removed two of these last week.

I’m at work right now so I can’t take a picture. But I’ve already got the housing and diff separated from the transmission. I took the driveshaft flange out already too so it’s just the center diff in the housing. I put a 14mm socket (I think) and an extension in the hole and tried to tap the center diff out of the housing, it didn’t work and I stopped because I didn’t want to damage it

I think he meant that he got the snap ring out and he was trying to tap out the output shaft, but he stopped short of damaging it because it was held up on something.

I’ve got the output shaft out, it’s just the center diff in the housing. I can’t see anything else I’d need to do to get it out and it just won’t come out

I’ll take a look at the snout with the Torsen in it. I have it sitting on the bench. I think it just dropped out when I had it upright.

It’s held in by a bearing. It popped out with gravity.

    1. weld what and why
    2. what transmission, they are all different
    3. you can't get it out the trans, or it's already out and can't strip it down

I put 4:1 washers in whatever comes in GJW/GJV. Torsen T3? I forget. I believe JHM lists the differences and pictures on their site.

It had a sleeve case that had to be taken off. And roll pins holding the torsen together that pretty much had to get a little drill in the center, tap some threads into it, turn a screw in, and then pull it out with the screw.
Then everything falls apart and you have to keep track of what goes where and faces which way.

The diffs aren't all the same including dimensions and may not interchange into different transmissions for example one out of an S4 0A3 vs. one out of an 02X such as GJW/GJV
