B9.5 S5 - Res Delete or Valved System?

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
    Hi all -

Just picked up a '24 S5 sportback and loving it so far. Truly no complaints besides its lackluster exhaust sound.

I have a VPS res delete kit on the way but wondering if the valved system options (e.g., ECS, Valvetronic, Milltek) are the way to go. If so, which option and why?

I've heard nothing but good things about the VPS res delete, but I understand this is a very mild and supposedly barely noticeable upgrade from stock - particularly from the cabin. Please correct me if I'm wrong.

As such, I'd like to explore more aggressive valved options - but... without the drone, loud pops and upshift bangs that downpipes & similar mods seem to create.

Any & all feedback is greatly appreciated, thanks !

I am on the same boat, picked up a 2021 S5 Sportback last weekend, going the res delete option but just having a shop I know cut the resonator sections out and weld some new pipes. I?ve heard enough good clips to at least give it a try, if I need more I?ll go full exhaust.

I just bought a used VSP kit for my B9 S5. It sounds almost the same as stock in comfort mode. In dynamic, it is only slightly louder. But the burbles and heavy throttle upshifts are definitely louder, which is nice. I do like it. And for $100, it's a hell of an upgrade. But I could use a little more sound. I'll keep it this way for a while, though.

I did a front res delete in my 9.5 S4. exhaust shop cut them out. volume is the same, tone seems a bit deeper. Its very minor.. I have 034 stg 1 crackle file, and the crackles did increase since the delete when valves open. valve closed no pops etc..

im now considering mid res delete cause i too want more character from the exhaust. but i dont want the drone.. some say mid drones, some say it doesn.. idk

idk if what we want is possible unless buying a new catback system.

I have a 2020 S5 Sportback. I started with Deleting the bigger mid res and it was a substantial difference in sound when accelerating as well as elevated pops and crackles. The drone while cruising at 2000rpm was unbearable. I went back and had the res reinstalled and had them remove the 2 smaller front resonators. The sound was fractionally better, a bit deeper; What was much more noticeable was the pops on upshifts and the crackles on the downshifts. Worth it for the small financial cost (unfortunately it cost me to remove and reinstall the back res as well). It has inspired me to drive a little more in manual shift mode.

I had an exhaust shop delete the front resonators and I'm very happy with the results... it's not annoying loud and there is no drone, it's nearly the same in comfort mode but in dynamic and in S mode it's a big difference. Especially noticeable on cold start and on downshifts (crackles etc). I've gotten several compliments and even my girlfriend who is completely car illiterate noticed a difference and asked me how much money I spent LOL. Last week a coworker said "oh was that your car purring a minute ago" when I walked into the building. I personally wouldn't want it any louder as it's still classy and understated but still aggressive sounding. Anything more would be annoying IMO.

I have been toying with the idea of cutting out the resonators myself, but I am afraid it wont be loud enough. I am one of the weird ones that likes super loud exhaust. I have had AWE track exhaust on 3 of my last few cars and have enjoyed it quite thoroughly. (RS3, M5, S4) I would love to spend a couple hundred $$ and be happy with the sound. I don't mind drone.
Finding a used system for a B9 RS5 sportback is really hard and the reason why I would lean towards having a shop delete the resonators.

Hoping you guys can clear it up for me? Lol. You think the sound of the res delete would be enough?

    To respond to the OP:
I think valved systems are trash. I have always hated valved systems and have never heard one that sounds the way it should. Even on my M5 it still wasn't loud enough. The problem being there is really only one company that makes a system without using the valves and that is AWE. I have used AWE track systems on 3 of my vehicles and the sound was always great. The problem is that it can be spendy for a brand new system so going used is preferred, but on some vehicles you just cannot find a used system. My M5 was easy. Found it right away on the BMW Forums, and when I sold the vehicle I sold my exhaust in 1 day on those same forums.

I think if you delete all three resonators there would be a substantial increase in sound. When I did just the back it was pretty noticeable, sounded good but lots of drone at low rpms. doing just the smaller fronts was not as noticeable but sounded better all around. all three combined might do the trick. Be curious to hear what the results are like if you do it.

Just got the shop to cut my resonators and add a pair of Diamond Black tips to complete the black out look on the S5. My initial reaction is “not enough” but better. You can hear the exhaust just a bit more in the cabin, but it’s no where near where I want the sound to be. I will leave it as it is for now as I got a few mods that I need to do first (tune, drop and rear diffuser).
This is a cheap way to get a little more sound and a good alternative to those looking for comfort and a bit more exhaust note. As others have noted there is no drone with this change so that’s a plus!

Quick update - got the VPS pipe installed and I'd agree it lives up to the hype. Livens up the exhaust without being obnoxious, emphasizes the downshift crackles & burbles, and provides a much needed "bass boost" to the overall tone. I wouldn't mind a bit more noise but there doesn't seem to be many options out there without creating drone/rasp (e.g., X pipe, HFC).

Now onto an 034 intake and transmission mount insert.
