    Benefits/Risks Top Tier high octane fuel . . .

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
I appreciate your thoughts on Top Tier, high octane fuel.
Are the benefits offset by the possibility the fuel has degraded due to slower sales and longer time sitting in station's tanks.
I can't imagine the 93 octane is a very high percentage of sales.

Thanks in advance for any expertise.

93 octane is just standard premium in most states. Here in CO 91 is the highest and I think there are more people who actually buy Premium rather than the lowest grade 85/87.

Not sure where you are but 93 is standard here in Florida. If you're in an area where 91 is the standard but you have access to 93, I'd run 93 as often as possible.

93 here in Texas. Since I really don?t drive all that much and burn through lots of fuel, 93 is absolutely fine with me. I occasionally even fill the Sequoia with it even though it?s complete overkill.

I love it when people put premium gas into low compression vehicles and think it helps

    I'm in Tennessee where typically 87, 89, 93 available.
Since the vast majority of consumers purchase regular or 87, just curious if there is any truth to the idea that 93 might get stale sitting in the storage tanks.

Never gave this a thought. If it was a problem, I'd imagine anyone that's tuned would see problems before anyone else. My current S5 is stock. My previous S3 was stage 1, GLI was stage 2. I never noticed any difference in performance from one fill up to the next. I use Shell 93 most of the time.

You'd be surprised on how many cars use premium fuel these days. With a lot of MFG's going to turbo/SC applications or high compression to get more power out of smaller displacement vehicles the swap from reg to premium fuel is becoming more prevalent.

I think fuel age is more an issue of location than fuel type. Big city, it's not sitting long but a back road country mom and pop service station with low foot traffic, may be more of a possibility. If you are super concerned with things, you can always ask the attendant when their last delivery was but IMHO it's overkill and not something you really need to stress over.

I'm pretty sure they refill the tanks at my Costco at least once a day

We have mostly 91 octane in MN. I always get 93. I drive out of the way to get it even. Luckily I have stations fairly close to work and home and one the way as well where 6 ish miles would be the most distance I would need to travel to get it.
Does it sit too long in the tanks? Living pretty close to Minneapolis I think the tanks are switched out pretty regularly. If you live in a small town though you could run into issues. My wife drives a 2018 Durango that requires 87 octane. I cannot remember a time that I was like hmmm I think I am going to spend 80 cents more a gallon to get 93 octane for no reason. If your car needs premium its ok, if it does not then don't waste your money.

US CA guys are certainly stuck with 91 (although we have some race fuel locations on pumps as well ) What I can say, is that there are certain **Cough** ARCO **Cough** stations that regardless of the octane rating cause issues with tuned vehicles out here... its annoying to say the least.

Which fuel would you buy if you rented a car that took premium?

A co-worker has a tuned A4, and he has issues with Costco premium fuel (pinging). Told him to try Chevron premium (91). Problem went away.
I had a V6 Touareg that could use 87. It came from the dealer with that gas. Once that was spent, I put in 91, and that made a difference in how the engine responded.
I wished I could get 93 here in Kaliforniastan. I'd use that every time.

As far as overall percentage of people buying 93 (or 91), I actually pay attention everytime I fill up. I can say its always at least 1 in 3 using premium, so I do not see an issue with the higher octane gas becoming "Stale". Also you have to remember, there is no 89 tank in almost every gas station. They do a mix of 91 and 87 to make 89. No I am going to start to looking for people using 89 now too....

I always run Premium 93 (all premium here in FL) in the RS5 and my C5Z Vette. Our Jeep Wrangler claims it can run on either Premium or Regular. With that said, it runs noticeably smoother and feels more zippy with Premium. As a result we run Premium as much as possible.
