    Oil Change Friendliness

Just completed my 1500 mile oil change on my 2024 SQ5 Sportback and what a piece of cake. Bought the FCP Euro oil change kit for $108 then pop the hood, pull the oil access tube plug, insert oil extractor tube (borrowed a friends oil extractor), suck out the existing oil, change the oil filter, refill with fresh oil. Quick, easy, no mess and about half the price you'd pay to have a shop do it - I'm sure much more savings relative to what a dealership would charge.

Yup, oil extractors are a game changer.

call me crazy but I still jack the car up and drain from the bottom.

Less than $100 out the door at the local dealership for 8 quarts, an oem filter, drain plug, and crush washer.

To clarify, you changed the oil after the first 1500 of use of the car? I plan on doing that too after the first 1500-2000 miles when mine arrives in July.

I tried an extractor last time and I couldn't get all the oil out. Ended up doing it the old fashioned way. Maybe it was a bad extractor so I exchanged for a new one. Will try again next time to see if any better luck.

Just a cursory look. I'll change the oil again at 5000 miles then every 5000 afterwards. If contaminents were/are present, hopefully they'll be gone by 5000 miles.

I fully get why folks would go the easy way for quickie oil changes, a huge time saving for one. But, if you're dropping the engine panel beneath, whilst slowly draining the oil into a tank, having a good squiz (look around) with a torch (flashlight) in your hand, you'll likely catch things you might not if you're only doing what's always been a bottom job from the top.

OK for newer cars, maybe not so for anything with a coupla miles on its odometre.

Agreed - I always take the time to have a look around while I am under there. Gravity tends to hide things from you sometimes. LOL. But I have a nice ship with a sloped pull up, so ramps and air suspension to high and I can easily get to all of it. The extractors are great for a quicky before a trip or people with limited space tools for sure though. Pick your poison. Either way is pretty easy.

something always made me nervous about the extractor method, considering the heavier metal bits and stuff are usually settled at the bottom of the pan, and you don?t really have gravity to pull them out and you?re also not at the lowest point of the pan. idk.

Put the car in its highest setting, drive up ramps, park, put the car in tire changing mode. Remove the underbody protector and drain. Peek around for leaks, debris or fraying.

The underbody covering couldn’t be easier on this car.

It's very easy to do the same inspection while the oil is extracting.. and with all the time saved you have MORE of an opportunity to inspect more thoroughly.

With FCP euro you send back your old oil, filter, washer for a full refund.. try that at your local dealership.

Enjoy this while it lasts :) I am certain this won't go on forever. They keep making more and more rules around it for returns. It's only a matter of time before they get rid of returning used oil.

one way to make sure they stop doing this even sooner is to keep taking advantage of what was supposed to be a joke that you do once
