Baselining my son's 2006 2.0T, and ran into this gem...

...Made in China Napa Gold Oil filter. I have run Mann filters for 15+ years in my B5, ten in a BMW 335i, two years in his B6, and will do the same in his B7.

running thick oil and/or cold climate and/or low usage car, will do the same even on mann filter.

and Ive opened them in 2, and test it on my 4 cars was almost the same, but the n/a car. bought all them on FCP, so they were real. No more issues with mahle.

inb4 people said they dont had this issue : have you ever take the time to check it, open it, run the car 4000km/year when weather jump from -28°C to 32°C, with 10-40 oil ? doubt.

also wont really cause issues on short terms, since you have a bypass valve.

this mann was on my n55, 9000km, more or less 10months, but did the same on my n54 and 2.0t.
Some people reported the same on N52s, but mine was fine. run mahle anyway.
did not test it on my cayenne, since this is my latest car, and I have enough of a good sample to not test it.

Ive NEVER pulled a filter out that looks like that.. Thats not "normal". Id say it may happen to any if ran longer enough, but thats why OCI is important.
And isnt the bypass valve in the pump on the b7? How would it bypass the filter if collapsed?
Do your know how long that filter has been in the car?

Jayz It's been a long while since I went over the b7 lubrication system but, if I remember correctly, it goes something like this: The valve in the pump that you referred to controls the max oil pressure delivered to the lube system. Especially at higher RPM, that valve shunts a portion of oil directly back into the sump obviating overpressure in the rest of the lube system. The bypass valve in the oil filter housing essentially partially by-passes the oil filter, supplying lubrication to the rest of the lube system. This bypass is active when the oil viscosity is high (cold engine) or the filter is very clogged thereby inhibiting oil flow. I believe there is also an anti-bleed back valve in the filter housing too as the cartridge type oil filters don't have one built into them as a traditional canister type oil filter would. Anyway, in hundreds of oil changes I also have never seen one crushed like this one.

Yeah, Idk why i was thinking the pressure valve was a bypass, lol. Im not aware of exactly how the system is exactly, buy have seen collapsed filters cause low pressure. Maybe it had to be paired with a faulty bypass valve.?
Guess the housing has to have one, like some canister filters do. I know my Subie has a bypass valve in the filter, thats why its important to use certain ones, cuz of the PSI rating varies.
But not matter what, I wouldnt be happy pulling a filter out, looking like OP's..
Only time ive had one look remotely like that was a K&N(garbage) cartridge.

While I don't know the number of miles or viscosity oil used by the PO, the car is now baselined with Castrol Edge 5/30 A3/B4 grade oil. Will see what things look like 5,000 miles / six months from now. I have owned German cars since 1997, and none of the filters have ever look that bad.
