TPMS Activation and Wheel / Tire Set Swapping

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
    Hi All,

Last season I tracked a few times with the stock wheels and loved the fact I could monitor pressures and air temperatures (not tread temps obviously) using the Sport display. For this season, I was hoping I could drive to my track events on my OEM wheel / tire setup setup and swap to my new track wheel/tire setup when I get there and still have direct TPMS data on the MMI. I just got a new track wheel setup with direct TPMS sensors from Neuspeed RS Wheels but I haven't ben able to get the car to recognize the new TPMS sensors yet. Going back to the shop that mounted the TPMS sensors and tires on the new wheels to troubleshoot this week.

In the meantime, I'd like to hear form others who are successfully swapping out track / street or summer / winter wheels sets and what you need to do to get the TPMS sensors working each time you swap.

    Thanks.

I’ve probably swapped 20 sets of wheels since 2019, always used OE sensor never once had to do anything more then go into the mmi and select “store pressures now” , pressures and temps always should up after that and once you drove over 15mph for the first time after reset.

swapped wheels mee to, using Audi genuine sensors and they started working after a while (maybe 5/7 miles or so).
@o1turbo30v: are you sure you can store the pressure even when the display shows the -- ?

OEM sensors?? I think the dealer quoted me $1300 just for the parts, no labor.

I got a set on eBay for like $150 for my winter wheels/tire setup. They have worked for a couple seasons without issue. Part number and seller: https://www.ebay.com/itm/38380840172...mis&media=COPY

Ok. For what it’s worth, I am seeing several 8Y owners having the issues. 8V seems to be fine.

Bummer! They came pre-programmed and worked seamlessley on the 8V. Perhaps people didnt get the pre-programmed ones? Also it may be worth calling TPMS.COM and discussing their return policy or guarantee of compatibilty.

that's really cool. When they arrived coded, did you have to do anything special to pair them with your vehicle? When you swap them each season, does it remember both sets, and do you have to do anything when you switch to get it to read one over the other?

Nothing special to be done…if you get impatient I think re-storing tire pressures helps speed things up. I usually do that because I am a bit impatient. Your car reads them off of a local antenna so after swap it will pick up whichever are mounted on the car. I’ve had two sets of wheels with sensors for 4 years now both sets with sensors from TPMs.com. My original OEM wheels/tires still have the OEM sensors in them. Haven’t used those wheels/tires for 3+ years.

I have my OEM sensors on my track set of wheels. I have a warning whenever I have my daily wheels on, which is annoying, but I care more about my pressures on the track than street. I'm going to buy sensors the next time I change my street wheels. Not sure when that will be though cause they see much less wear. Hopefully there's a good solution for the 8Y.

8Y here. I used the sensors from tpms.com without any issues.

When I swap on the winter wheels and started to drive, the MMI recognized the new sensors and prompted to store the tire pressures.

    Pretty seamless.

Problem solved. Went to local VAG performance shop for alignment and they were able to reset the TPMS warning with ODIS, filled the tires up to 45 psi, and on the way home the sensors kicked in. So maybe just had to wake them up with a bump in pressure? Regardless, now back in business.

Looking at tpms.com, I see there are 2 brands: Upro vs. Huf. Any difference between the 2?

I see Huf is pricier (Front: $69.98/pcs & Back: $34.98/pcs) and Upro is a set for $109.96.. Not sure which one to get
