Lightbulb Audi MMI (MHI2) DIY firmware update

Hi! Few days ago I've updated my old 2016 firmware with the most recent one.
Here's my tutorial on how to go from old MHI2_ER_AU37x_P3242 to new MHI2_ER_AU37x_P5089.

    0. Warnings and info
    • Do at your own risk.
    • If you had you unit patched, this will overwrite the patch with stock files. You will have to patch the system again afterwards.
    • You will need and SD card. Don't use USB drive. Don't use microSD + adapter, only good old full size SD card.
    • If you have B&O, you will need VCDS or OBDeleven to exclude it from the update.
    • Read all before starting. If something is unclear, don't update until you know what you are doing.

    1. Ignition on, MMI on, wait about 1 minute for the system to fully load.

    2. Enter hidden red menu (REM - Red Engineering Menu) with button combination: NAV/MAP + MEDIA (starting with NAV/MAP button). Hold this combination for 3 seconds. RED will appear on the display.

    3. Scroll down to version information to check which version you have currently. Version is divided into 4 parts: Unit type, region, car brand and model, sw release version.
In my case it was MHI2_ER_AU37x_P3242 which means:
    • MHI2: MIB2 High
    • ER: Europe & Rest of the world
    • AU37x: Audi, 37x cars
    • P3242: Production release, number 3242.

To exit REM use the same button combinations.

    4. Go to mib-helper.com, paste your current version there, and you will get more details about your current firmware as well as info about possible updates. Here's what I got: http://mib-helper.com/index.php?trai..._P3242#details - it states that there's MHI2_ER_AU37X_P5153 version.

    5. Go to mibsolution.one to download new firmware. We need to look for package with matching unit type, region, car brand and model. Only the sw release version will be different (higher). In my case MHI2_ER_AU37X_P5153 was not there, but there's MHI2_ER_AU37X_P5089 version which will be good enough. Download it and unzip it. Use Free Download Manager if speeds are low.

    6. Prepare SD card. I've used 16GB SD, formatted with FAT32 file system, 4096b allocation size. Copy over the unzipped update files to the SD card. You need to place the update files in the top directory of the SD card. In such way that all the folders and the metainfo2.txt file are in root directory of the card.

    7. If your car is equipped with B&O amplifier, you need to make sure that it will not be updated. If you update the amp, you will have no sound until you upload parameters with ODIS or VCP to it.
To make sure that the amp is not updated, I've changed coding of the MMI to disable fiber optic connection (MOST). I've used OBDeleven, found module 5F, long coding, MOST, disabled. Then rebooted MMI with button combination and confirmed that MOST is not working (there was no sound in the system).

    8. Start the engine or connect external power source to the car. Turn off heating, lights, fans, etc... You don't want any voltage drops during the update.

    9. Remove USB sticks and SD cards, insert update SD into SD1 port in the glovebox, once again enter REM, select update, SD1, scroll down and start the update.
It will takie about 20 minutes. System will reboot several times. Screen will go dark several times. That's normal. Do not interrupt the update.

    10. 20 minutes later you will see update summary. Confirm it. On the next screen hit "Cancel". Unit will reboot one more time.

    11. When it reboots, remove the SD card. Connect with OBDeleven/VCDS to reenable MOST. Reboot the unit and check if sound is OK.

    12. In module 5F you will see two fault codes:
    • one is from the MOST being disabled previously. now you can just clear it.
    • one is from the update (B201A). Use https://mib-helper.com/im-so-xory/ to fix this. But if you leave it, it will not cause any harm. It will not limit the functionality in any way.

    13. Enjoy!

    Changes that I found:
    • Subwoofer knob appeared in sound settings,
    • System is loading little bit faster,
    • Google Earth replaced with Satellite Maps from HERE,
    • TEL/PHONE button shows CarPlay shortcut if CarPlay device is connected.

Also, if you have other unit type (MSTD, MHIG, MST2, MHS2...), there are also updates for you. Not sure if the procedure is 100% the same (espacially with the audio amp) but you can try.
