RS5 Daytime Running Lamp went out

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
I got the dash warning light indicating right side daytime running lamp is out. After a few days or weeks it went out and light came back on working fine. I think this happened one more time and now it is out again for over a month so I don’t think it’s coming back on.

I doubt the led is actually bad but from my understanding it is not serviceable and you have to replace the whole assembly which is several thousand dollars.

Has anyone had this issue and been able to troubleshoot or repair without replacing the whole assembly? Any useful info would be appreciated.

I'm getting a lot of reports of this the past couple months. My guess is bad drl driver modules and i usually have people swap the one from the good headlight to the broken one to see if that does it. If any moisture gets into the headlamp and makes it's way into the driver it'll short circuit and trip that code. I've had it happen to me.

If the driver module doesn't solve the issue then it probably is the LEDs. For the A5/S5/RS5 one LED board is serviceable from the outside but there's a second board you can only get to by disassembling the headlamp. You can find replacements for the external one online from ebay or aliexpress. I sell the boards for the internal one because they're identical to the S4. Alternatively you could install one of my switchback DRL kits which replaces the OEM boards with ones that have both white and amber DRLs, and makes your DRLs function as turn signals.

If you aren't comfortable working on your own headlights there are several builders out there who can do it for you, including myself. Just reach out and I can help you find someone.

As mentioned above there is the LED ballast on the side of the headlamp. The LED module itself is actually replaceable although Audi does not sell it separately so you'd probably have to buy a used headlamp and remove it. Many owners find their LED's start to turn a Yellowish color but not sure if anyone has determined if it is the LED bulb module or wiring. I know many have changed the LED ballast without curing the Yelllowing so it most likely is a fault in the LED bulbs. I do have a RS5 headlamp that I sold then refunded the buyer as he said the LED was a little Yellowish. The LED Bulb module is on the back outer side and the LED DRL you see from the front is just a Fiber Optic tube. If I remember right the module has two separate LED and the Tube or Loop has two ends that meet at the module.

You can buy the LED boards. The A5/S5/RS5 has two boards one inside the headlamp, and the one you can remove from the back (that you mentioned.

I developed replacement boards for the A4/S4 and the internal one is the same for the A5/S5. The external one does have two LEDs though and you can buy them on eBay.

    External:

Internal (I can do a kit with only two boards for a 5, just reach out):

My switchback kits can also fix yellowing, but some of the yellowing comes from degrading light tubes too:

I'm here to help if anyone has questions. I've spent a ton of time sorting out failing DRLs on the B8.5s.

    Thanks,
    Tyler

That's awesome Tyler. I may have to buy a set for a spare as I've got a S5 & RS5 and the wife has a Q5. I think they're the same LED unit on all 3. Both my S5 & RS5 have e-codes but as far as I know the LED portion is still the same.
