I doubt the led is actually bad but from my understanding it is not serviceable and you have to replace the whole assembly which is several thousand dollars.
Has anyone had this issue and been able to troubleshoot or repair without replacing the whole assembly? Any useful info would be appreciated.

I'm getting a lot of reports of this the past couple months. My guess is bad drl driver modules and i usually have people swap the one from the good headlight to the broken one to see if that does it. If any moisture gets into the headlamp and makes it's way into the driver it'll short circuit and trip that code. I've had it happen to me.
If the driver module doesn't solve the issue then it probably is the LEDs. For the A5/S5/RS5 one LED board is serviceable from the outside but there's a second board you can only get to by disassembling the headlamp. You can find replacements for the external one online from ebay or aliexpress. I sell the boards for the internal one because they're identical to the S4. Alternatively you could install one of my switchback DRL kits which replaces the OEM boards with ones that have both white and amber DRLs, and makes your DRLs function as turn signals.
If you aren't comfortable working on your own headlights there are several builders out there who can do it for you, including myself. Just reach out and I can help you find someone.
