    8Y transmission

Just acquired 2023 RS3 10 days ago maybe~ . I noticed that this DQ500 transmission is a lot more clunkier at lower speeds than DL501 that I am coming from.
In normal city driving whether its in auto or comfort when stopping it jerks you around on downshifts especially noticeable downshifting into 2nd gear.
Car has only 4000 miles. Definitely not first time driving dual clutch and had previous s4 for 7 years before this car. In other threads I've read that for some people it goes away once transmission is fully warmed up and its only clunky while its cold, but it doesn't really in this case.
I am just curious if this is normal behavior or worth a dealer visit?

When I saw the title I thought you blew it…

Def feel 2nd gear warmed or not, but you get used to it. Specially if you are coming from high rpms.

2 very different transmissions, the dq500 is a dual clutch gearbox made by vw, the dl501 is an 8 speed gearbox (torque converter type) made by ZF. Each one has their own characteristics, yes the ZF box will be smoother at lower speeds.

This car definitely is not smoothest in low speed city driving. Thank you for the feedback

DL501 is what B8/8.5 S4 has and that is 7 speed dual clutch.

    The DSG is clunky. I had more than a half a dozen VW/ Audi new and used ones and they are all clunky: MK5 GTI(used), MK5 GLI, MK6 Golf TDI, MK4 Passat TDI, B9A4, 8V A3(used), 8V S3, 8V RS3, 8Y RS3, 8Y RS3. The RS3 is clunky, don't worry , I also hate it.

There are a lot of flaws on these transmissions. the DL501 was good but it also had a few flaws(look it up on ECS page). It was strong transmission too but not perfect. I personally prefer a 8 Speed ZF because they are super smooth. the torque converter cushions a lot.

One thing I absolutely dislike about my RS3 in the mornings when is cold is taking off at low speeds you have to hit the gas hard to get it to move. You hear that wooossshhh but it feels like the transmission is not grabbing.
8V RS3 [email protected] mph (ran a few 11.7s stock and ran 118+mph several times)
8Y RS3 k&N filter ran [email protected] (ran 11.6 5 times and trapped 120+ several times)
    at 3100ft elevation

I can definitely appreciate the sentiment and DL501 wasn't the perfect either, but this just feels like another level. I would say at high speed driving , shifts are great and I totally love it.
I was worried a bit at first, but sounds like I just need to get used to it. This is just low speed annoyance :)

Agreed, dq500 can be annoying, many of us flash it with better software.

I hate that too...it doesn't want to go during cold start/fast idle.
I limit the cold start to about 15 seconds and by the time I back out of the driveway it's ready to go.

I don't bother driving until the idle falls to where it's supposed to be. Old habit from my R as my R would misfire if I tried to drive before then. Everything behaves much better if you just wait a little bit.

A 'warm' garage can sure help. Our 2019 Audi RS 3 lives in our garage
that is kept at 60°F in the winter, as outside temps are typically 30°F
or lower. Certainly makes a big difference in cold weather vehicle
performance, after we had the garage heavily insullated many years
    ago.

The clutches just slip during cold start. If cold start disabled then it doesn't slip at all.

I do notice that having a DP does extend the cold start...the full 60 seconds max. Stock DP didn't do this. I assume because the downstream o2 monitoring.

I'm sure as tunes for these things start to become available, more and more of you will end up tuning the transmission. Depending on who you go with and how far you go, you might find yourself quite displeased with the shifting characteristics even more than when the car was stock. I personally loathe my current TCU tune and will be soon moving onto a new one when the new turbo goes in. I don't think that the trans has to be that clunky, it just is in factory settings. I'm thinking it's for longevity purposes of the clutch/flywheel.

For the first 50 yrs of driving, I had only owned and driven manual transmissions. When I got my '21 TT RS, I absolutely hated the transmission - it was nonstop annoying as hell. However, I knew that a good TCU tune could remedy most of the issues. I installed a TVS tune and it has done absolute wonders. I am very happy with the transmission now.

I didn't notice any change in low speed operation going from stock TCU to Unitronic TCU. In any case, never found it to be bothersome.

I go between driving my RS3 and B9 SQ5 and I would always choose the dual clutch for its eagerness and immediacy.

And yes the DQ500 will slip the clutches when cold.
