How to check cam phaser adaptation?

What scan tool are people using that inexpensive? I seen the obdeleven, but on its app it has had bad recent reviews. I’m really only going to use it for this purpose to make sure the chain does not need to be replaced. So any guidance would be great.

Get VCDS or find someone local to scan

OBDeleven without the Pro subscription will let you read/clear codes and read measuring values, which is what this particular item is. But VCDS is the better tool, assuming you have a Windows laptop to run it on.

why not just pop the inspection cover and take a pic of the tensioner. and post it here . it will cost you nothing and we can tell you how close your chain is to need replacing based on empirical data. I bet you we are pretty close.

If people are willing to let me know with a photo I will upload it next week as i will be doing the plugs and coils this weekend and take a pic. Otherwise I can do the vcds. I talked myself out of it a few years back and just bought the scanner so I could clear the oil change light. Guess I should’ve just bought it then lol

Late response but I ended up buying a vcds and was just able to get a reading done that was -2.97. I’m assuming I’m in the clear for now, but what’s the estimated mileage I should be looking at before having to replace the timing chain, guide and tensioner. Currently the car has 92k miles.

That is a pretty good reading for 92k miles. I would expect you to be good for at least another 50k miles before you need to address the chain/guides/tensioner.

It’s probably good because this is my wife’s car. Probably seen high rpm’s less than 10 times in whole life when I drove it lol.
While I was in there i did notice the valve covers leaking and into the spark plugs. I ended up holding off on replacing the plugs and coils.
What should I be expecting to pay for the for this job. Seems like it’s not a simple replacement from what I’ve been reading.
