    B6 S4 4.2 V8 rear coolant crossover hose?

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
Seems like I probably have the same problem as beerad. At rear of the engine, some coolant hose got disconnected and leaked all of the coolant.

This is what mine looks like. and just like he said the pictures are pointing down the back of the motor, behind PVC/ oil filter housing.

No idea what to do, I'm wondering if I should just tow it to a shop.
If anyone has any info on it that would really help, this is my daily

That’s the hose starting from your heater core down to the hard coolant line to the back of the motor.
Yes you would need to replace that. Not smart driving very far with no coolant.

Ha my read the thread you posted. But it can be repaired either by cutting the factory clamp off and replacing with just an end connector piece or by replacing the whole heater core coolant line

If you remove the battery tray cover and look to the right of the battery you will see a heat shield wrap. Remove that and you’ll see two coolant hoses coming out of heater core…I believe the bottom one goes to the back of the engine but you can verify by wiggling it and seeing it move. There is a u clip that holds the plastic end to the back of the engine pipe that needs to be removed.

I did mine with my engine out during timing service but I imagine this can be done with the engine in but will be tight like every thing in this engine when working on it.

would it be possible to do it my self? Or should I just tow it to a shop to get it fixed?

It’s possible to do it yourself.
    It’s just tight back there.
Pull the clip up and pop off the hose

So the hose itself got disconnected from the connector and the connector is still connected to the engine? Do I just need to remove the connector and disconnect the whole hose or just put a new connector? idk how it works

I would buy the whole hose/connector together.
You can buy just the connector and a worm clamp tho

Yes remove the old connector from the hard coolant pipe on the back of the motor and disconnect it from the heater supply next to the battery

So if I were to get this one and I was able to get the old hose and connector off, I could just slap the new one in or would I also need another o-ring?

ok so Im pretty sure that I need the "early" heater hose because JHM says for the late one, the VIN needs to be greater than 8E-4-189001. and mine is 8E-4-134012. Now I am stuck on finding the "early" version. Any idea?

No need to replace the hoses at all - just get the replacement fitting that degrades and pop it back in the car.

ok well now Im stuck on trying to get the hose off of the heater core and trying to get the connecter off of the engine. I cant figure out how to get a pick tool or my hands to pull the retainer for the connector. Also I just bought a new connector from FCP Euro, will be here in a couple days. https://www.fcpeuro.com/products/aud...RoCLrwQAvD_BwE

Grab a set of car trim removal tools from any auto store and put a little coolant on tip of tool…insert it into the tube around the heater core. Work it around until the old tube slowly pulls away from pipe. Twist and pull as you continue to loosen the old pipe from the metal heater core. It will eventually come off.

As far as the clip, you will need to twist and pull upward to disengage the sides that “clip” it in place. Most likely you’ll bend it if it’s never been removed…the part you got from FCP comes with a new one.

Why do you need to remove the side going to heater core if you are using the adapter option from FCP?

Idk how else I would get the new connector in without taking the hose fully out. Keep in mind I have not moved anything out of the way so I barely have any room to be able to even get my hand behind the engine. Also on the heater core I tried to get in there with a pick tool on the hose but it seems like it does nothing. And with the connector on the back of the engine I just cant even pull the metal clip up to release the retainer

The hose will come off. Coolant Hoses that have never been removed in an 18 year old car will be extremely stubborn and will take patience.

Not sure how you will fit a hand back there to get broken end off. I’ve only done it with engine out or have seen others do it with oil filter housing and intake manifold removed giving more room to work back there. The video link above shows what it looks like with these removed and gave him room to work. Along with battery removed like you have done.

I’m not saying this is a must but my hands are way too big to do it in your state. Obviously removing those items takes you down a road you might not be comfortable doing or wanting to do since it will add some cost (new gaskets, seals, oil, filters etc).

The manual seems to show you are able to disconnect it from the back of the rear coolant pipe without removing oil filter housing etc.

Yea I’m able to feel around back there and I can feel the clip I need to pull up I just can’t do it was my finger and I can’t seem to get the pick on it and now I just dropped my pick tool into the engine bay.

And for the hose on the heater I try to use the pick tool but I just can’t even get a grip on it with my hands and I don’t want to try to pull on it cuz I don’t want to break it

Take a 90 degree pick and work it in the backside of the hose. Also spray some we/40 to help unstick it as you pry further.
It’s just stick from all the heat cycles.
If you can’t do this maybe you should take it to a shop

I was starting to think that I wouldn’t need to take the hose but then I realized that there is the old broken plastic piece that is still inside of the hose. Would it be better to try and get the old broken piece out of the hose or just take the whole hose out

I am not sure sure what your talking about.
The old piece that’s broke on the back of the motor needs to be taken complete off , and the plastic piece inside it as well.
And then replace with new connector / plastic piece inside and pop the new connector on ?

Didn’t you buy a new hose with connector ?
Or did you just buy the connector itself and your plan is to to splice it on ?

Yea I just bought the connector and I mean that the old broken connector the neck on it broke and it’s still partly in the hose I don’t know if I should take the hose fully out or just try and get the old broken piece out of the hose

Either way it will not be fun. But it does need to be removed from the hose.
You should probably think about how your going to clamp the connector to the hose, and decide from there

Great News! The S4 is fixed and running just like it was before

Thanks to the help of everyone who replied to my post and a few YouTube videos(they didn't really help, this one really helped though,https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AZRoLtQwsug&t=1413s) (Pictures are rotated to the left for some reason)
I was able to get the old broken connector off of the engine and the hose off of the heater core, then get the old broken pieces of the neck that were still inside of the hose and remove the "permanent" metal ring

Keep in mind that I did this without taking out anything except for moving the coolant expansion tank out of the way

It wasn't very easy, but once I got the clip up on the connector, I used a small pry bar to push it off of where it connected to, after a little bit of pushing and making sure not to break anything it eventually came out
Then to get the hose off of the heater core, I used pliers to grab the hose on the part where the heater core was not(so like a little bit more down the hose so that I was not touching the neck of the heater core)
With using the pliers and a 90-degree pick tool I would pull on the hose with the pliers and use the pick tool to pull the hose at the same time(some WD-40 may help)

With some twisting and pulling it finally came off and I just pulled the hose up through the grommet

Then to get the metal ring off, I used pliers to basically pinch the metal ring and then rotate 90 degrees and do the same thing and I would keep doing that until it created a little gap to get my pick under it and then just pull it completely off of the hose
Also by doing that, it got all of the old broken neck that was still in the hose loose enough to where it would just fall out of the hose

Then with the new connector, I slipped it into the hose and put on a universal hose clamp from AutoZone to the hose in replacement of the "permanent" metal ring(wish I had taken a picture before I put it back in)

To put it all back in was not easy either it took a lot of finesse with the grommet
I pulled the grommet up out of the hole where it sits enough to where I could fit the hose with the new connector down through the hole and then connected it back on to wherever it connected to and pushed the retaining clip in
Then put the hose back onto the heater core and readjust the hose clamp back to where it was before

Glad it worked out and you did it without removing anything. You also now know how much patience is required with these old coolant hoses for your next coolant hose fix.

Can you buy a new plastic connector separately or do you need the whole hose? My plastic fitting is broken where it goes onto the engine.
