    Audi RS5 Competition Owner Review

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
I was initially writing this out as a reply to someone on here that asked for my thoughts on my newly acquired 2023 RS5 Competition after previously owning a 2021 non-comp RS5 but I ended up typing an entire paper so I figured I’d just make this a post instead!

    Here are my credentials:
Me: Regular guy - But one of the biggest Audi nerds.

    Previous Cars
    • 2014 B8.5 Audi A4 - APR Stage 1+. This car was a blast. It was flex fuel from the factory so ethanol tunes made it rip!
    • 2018 B9 Audi S5 Sportback - Stayed stock
    • Another 2018 B9 Audi S5 Sportback - 034 stage 2 tuned + Stage 1 TCU ( Intercooler, dp, etc)
    • 2021 B9.5 Audi RS5 sportback - 034 and IE Stage 1/1+ (tested on 91 octane, 93 octane, E85)

Currently - 2023 B9.5 Audi RS5 Competition Sportback fully loaded with CC brakes

I first want to say that this post is in no way meant to put down the Standard RS5 or any other Audi models. All RS/S cars are very competent machines. This is me just sharing my thoughts on what I believe is the greatest driving Audi (aside from the R8 of course) and one of the most incredible all around 4 door sedans on sale today.

Thoughts on my previous 2021 Audi RS5
My non-comp 2021 Audi RS5 was awesome after I did some mods to the car. It was stage 1 tuned and I also tried stage 1+ with E85 and the car was a rocket. I also had a resonator delete, intake, and spacers. It was truly a wonderful car once modded but a tiny bit dull when stock.

In comparison, this new comp spec is absolutely incredible from the factory without any mods. I know the main things Audi talked about within their press release was the handling with the new coilovers, swaybars, and other stuff, but there are a ton of subtle changes they made that make the car so much more entertaining.

    The transmission!
It's so aggressive during upshifts and downshifts yet too smooth and non-existent in comfort mode. It gives you a welcomed kick in your seat when you're pushing it and it’s very quick to upshift.

    The power!
I can't emphasize enough how enjoyable the power is in this car stock. I don't know what magic tuning Audi did for this car but it feels way more visceral than my non comp 2021 RS5. I test drove an RS7 and BMW M3 before getting my RS5 Comp and I did not feel like the RS5 comp was lacking in power compared to both of those cars. I’ve done some preliminary testing with my dragy while I was on all season tires in the middle of winter here in Minnesota and managed to pull off a 3.3 second 0 to 60 w/ no roll out and an 11.5 quarter mile @118.43MPH. The car was spinning a ton but still managed to pull off a 3.3 to 60! Incredible results for a lackluster attempt. This thing is FAST and I love it.

    The sound!
They removed 18 pounds of sound insulation and gave the car a new sport exhaust “plus” system. It's simply awesome. The pops are louder and there is more induction noise within the cabin. It's not obnoxious from the inside, but I've heard it from the outside and it kinda sounds like my non comp RS5 did when it had a resonator delete (maybe a tad bit quieter). One of the things that bothered the hell out of me when I test drove the new BMW M3 was the absurd amount of fake exhaust noise pumped in through the speakers. I get why BMW does it (and Audi too to some extent), but the volume that they do it at is a bit much in my opinion. The RS5 Comp has an aggressive authentic tone to it and I know the 2.9L motor in these cars can sound absolutely incredible with downpipes or a full AWE exhaust. I'm contemplating one of those options but for now, the sound is not a problem in this car.

    The handling!
Firstly, my non-comp RS5 was in no way boring to drive. It cornered super flat, and was a lot more capable than my old B9 S5. But the competition package put this car in a different league. It’s not just the coilovers or the stiffer sway bars; It’s the new traction control system (ESP), the new differential, the significant reduction in unsprung mass from the lightweight competition wheels + the carbon ceramics, the new sport direct steering, and more. The car is so incredibly well put together that it’s genuinely FUN just moving over to another lane on the highway. Sounds crazy, I know. I’ve never driven a car where I thought to myself “there’s no way I can explore this car's full capabilities on the street, I need a track” until I drove this car and the BMW M3. Both those cars hint at their true potential when driving through a curvy on ramp or making quick steering adjustments. They give you the feeling that their chassis are set up for taking corners at high speeds.

I could type all day about this car but this “little review” has gotten a bit lengthy so I’ll end on this: This is the greatest driving production Audi aside from the R8. I’ve tested the RS3 (old and new) and I’ve tested the RS6 & 7 performance & non performance versions. I love those cars for different reasons but they do not drive like the RS5 Comp. This is Audi’s “sharpest tool in the shed” - An audi sport director on carwow. It’s a passion project by the brand and I 100% believe they either lost money developing this car, or at best broke even. I’ve done the research on the price for the upgraded parts alone and it totaled out to a number much much higher than the comp package cost. And yes, I know the prices we pay for parts are not the same prices manufacturers pay to add them into a car but you have to remember that engineers still have to develop, tune, and optimize all these new parts to work together and that costs $$$$. In my opinion, the $16k comp package (now $10k without the ceramics) is worth every single penny.

Thanks for that review. I had watched the Throttle House Youtube video on this car and they came away impressed but didn't dive into the particulars of what all had contributed to its upgraded driving dynamics.

I was actually heavily considering ordering an RS5 comp spec after watching that same TH video, but ultimately decided against it due to how uncertain the market is at the moment. I'm also a major try before I buy type of person, and I wasn't about to tie up that kind of money without being 100% certain I could live with it long term. I was very surprised to see that they're offering it now with steel brakes, but I'm actually happy with that because with the kinds of roads I have in my area, the ceramics wouldn't get hot enough to be worth the expense. What made you venture away from the RS7 that you test drove?

Great write-up! I had written a reply that summarized similar feelings with a one sentence blurb on each of my old Audis that this dying forum ate and wouldn't retrieve the draft of, so quick summary instead, hah.

My first Audi was also a factory flex fuel '13 A5 that I tuned the bejeezus out of, since then, of all of them; stage 2+ '15 S3, two different (one new/one used and stage 2) '18 S4's, '19, '20 and '23 SQ5's in all sorts of tune including the current 034 91 stage 2 '23, '20 S5 coupe, '21 RS5 SB non-comp, current '23 RS5 SB Comp, and my '21 RS7...the RS5 Comp is my favorite pick of the bunch.

My RS7's V8 wailed like nothing else I've had (including my M5 Comp's) and ran an 11.4 @ 119 totally stock w/ better and more predictable throttle control in Dynamic...but the RS5 Comp did an 11.6 @ 118 the only time I tried running it stock on a damp road, has since been running the 93 034 stage 1 tune that feels 11.2-3 territory with an even slightly dry road (eventually I'll get one!)...and that suspension is just fantastic.

I've had to do multiple ~40 mile freeway trips the last two weekends and I had the same thought as OP in terms of even changing lanes feels so good compared to any of the other Audi's that I've owned and once pushed is still lacking steering feedback but gets the closest to any modern Audi of providing it through the suspension, it's just great, and the interior, the exhaust sound with the sound deadening tweaks, just the overall package is so, so good. It's w/o a doubt Audi's B9 send-off for the fans of the brand and they crushed it. All of my cars are without ceramics and because of the market and past purchases I actually got the Comp for below invoice and cheaper than my non-comp '21...you can probably work a similar deal, and for the price (~$89K) not much else checks all of the same boxes right meow. Go buy one while you still can, hah.

Take it for what its worth, but I have not experienced any porpoising effects at all.
It rides as I would expect a performance oriented car to ride. Its a bit rough but settles pretty much instantly. I have NOT made any adjustments thus far and it comes from the factory set more for comfort. So far I have no complaints at all about the suspension.

I know others have tinkered with the settings, so hopefully they will chime in with their experience.

I have not experienced porpoising in my B9 RS5 SB, which now has over 50K miles and has been all over the country and in Canada. Perhaps that's an issue with the facelift 9.5.

    Facelift B9.5 doesn't have that.

The RS7 I test drove was super fast and luxurious but I was looking for something more engaging to drive. It was a capable cars (it is an RS car after all) but it felt more like fast cruisers while the BMW M3 and RS5 Comp felt like nimble sedans. I then choose the RS5 Comp over the M3 because of the looks, sound, practicality, and "special-ness". I've always preferred Audi's and so getting the opportunity to own a limited edition track version of the RS5 with coilovers, cool wheels, and all the other special bits was the icing on the cake.

Great review! Thanks for taking the time to do a write up. Is your competition model the black sportback that Audi St. Paul had in their inventory a little while back?

Unfortunately the carbon ceramic brakes which save a huge amount of unsprung weight aren't available anymore. Those and the lightweight wheels are a significant factor in how the car feels.

Very thorough and interesting review. Does any mag or website instrumented tested or dyno the RS5 Competition?
Based on all the readings it appears it should have some additional hp.

Kinda goes over it, my dragy and another members dyno, even if all they did was shift the power band up and heavily revise the trans tuning in Sport, it's immediately noticeable in that setting stock, with a large difference in trap speed for a car with no more advertised power. The car felt faster right away than my base and after break-in, dragy showed the same thing. It's not night and day (though the rest of the changes make it great in addition to that) but it's a noticable change same as the 8V and 8Y RS3's have the same rated power but the 8Y is trapping significantly faster stock at the track and everyone's dragy's.

Awesome to see another from MN on here and enjoying an RS5. I always did wonder if the YouTube reviews were full of it, but it does sound like the car with the Comp package has been reworked enough to make a noticeable difference. So glad to be back in an RS5 and eagerly waiting it back from being fixed. :) My 330i rental is terrible!

    Ragy,

You had spacers on your 21' have you put spacers on with the stock comp wheels? I'm looking at doing 12mm rear and 10mm front or 15mm rear and 12mm front. I want a flush look, but not a fan of poke. Thoughts?

I think 12front 15rear would be a good fit. I personally went with 12.5 front and 12.5 rear and it was very flush with the comp wheels and I haven't notice any reduction in handling capabilities.

Sorry about the late reply, but nope this is not the comp from Audi of St. Paul. I was considering that one but It didn't have the carbon ceramics so i had to look elsewhere

I turned off the artificial sound (OBDII) and enabled a few other things.
With the artificial sound off, the interior is about as quiet as the regular RS5, maybe a tad louder. But from the outside, it definitely is louder.
I can hear more sounds from the stones picked up by the tires and hitting the wheel wells. Perhaps that is where they removed some sound-proofing stuff.

I love the factory suspension setting. The regular RS5 should have come that way from the factory!

Oh, it comes with wireless Android Auto as well. For my old 2021, I had to buy an AAWireless box.

The sound deadening that was removed was from the firewall.

The P Zero Corsas are super sticky, so at a minimum they are picking up and flinging more rocks than other tires. I assume you are hearing more sounds due to more rocks.
I definitely noticed the rocks hitting the wheel wells with the P Zeros on. I pulled to the side of the road once and there were so many it sounded like a hard rain on a metal roof. I rarely hear any now that I am currently running Michelin Pilot Sport All Season 4. I'll probably switch to Michelin Pilot Sport 4S (or S 5 if they have the size) next go around.

    For comparison
Pirelli P Zero Corsas UTQG: 80
Michelin Pilot Sport Cup 2s UTQG: 180
Michelin Pilot Sport 4S UTQG: 300

The P Zero Corsas are super sticky, so at a minimum they are picking up and flinging more rocks than other tires. I assume you are hearing more sounds due to more rocks.
I definitely noticed the rocks hitting the wheel wells with the P Zeros on. I pulled to the side of the road once and there were so many it sounded like a hard rain on a metal roof. I rarely hear any now that I am currently running Michelin Pilot Sport All Season 4. I'll probably switch to Michelin Pilot Sport 4S (or S 5 if they have the size) next go around.
Thank you! After your explanation, yeah, the tires are really sticky. I am not sure if I could keep up the tire expenses if I were to get these again... LOL

This car was transferred from Calabasas to my dealership, after I called the manager. This was the only Daytona Gray with full options (except the CCB and rear airbags) available within 100 miles of Orange County, at the time. This car had a lot of blemishes on the lower panels and one of the wheels. But they fixed all that up after I pointed them out. My dealership doesn't believe in proper detailing. They just wash it and give it to you, but they came through with the purchase.

I clayed the whole car, and there were deep dried bird poop everywhere as well.

Nice! I knew that was the same one I was looking at as there’s not many Competition around. He was offering it at invoice but has $3k+ of dealer add ons I didn’t care for LOL!

Cool nonetheless! Enjoy in good health.

This is like the 5th car that I bought from this dealership. I only made a call to the manager, asking him not to get the car yet because I was going in to negotiate. When I got there, they already got the car from Calabasas... No markup from them, and got about $2K discount with a reasonable trade in for my 2021 RS5. I literally bought the car with $80 increase in payment per month. (just another 60 months) They love my used cars as I never launch these cars and keep them like new, including the seats. It's for sale now.
