Hey guys question on the wheel bearing replacement. I found this thread and it is helpful but it made me want to ask this to those who may have done it before

    https://www.audizine.com/forum/showt...-cars-similar)

Do I need to remove the axles? would I not be able to just leave them in place since it looks like the bearing sits on the outside of the knuckle? or is it because the bearing/hub needs to be finessed out of

erwin.audiusa.com, pay for a day, get all the PDFs for your VIN. Then you'll have the "how you're suppose to do it" process, along with the side details of torque specs and what is replace if removed, etc. If you don't already have that in hand.

Watching a video showing the rear wheel bearing on a B8 Q5, it just looks like it would be a real pita to torque the bolts back properly, at least with a standard ratchet head torque wrench. Maybe easier with the wheel bearing housing jacked back up some, not sure.

Whatever you do, if you leave the axle in place, make sure to put the axle bolt back in the threaded hole so crap doesn't get into the CV joint grease. And never leave the wheel speed sensor still in place when messing with the wheel bearing or axle.

if you can turn the wheels back and forth you will not need to remove the axles. just need to turn the wheel some to access each hub bolt

That looks similar to the rear wheel bearings, which I did last winter. I did not need to remove the axle.

this wasn't too bad, was able to do this without removing the axle the hard part was the bearing was pretty seized in the knuckle, it took a lot of heat and hammering to get it free. once free I was able to work it out.
going to do the rears in a few weeks after I recoup from the holidays
