Raw fuel smell in the cabin after refueling

I filled my tank this morning from about 1/4 to full, once I got in the car and started it I was overwhelmed with raw fuel smell like someone had dumped gas all over the inside of the car it was so strong.

No engine light, just a history code for p0456.

When I got to work I popped the hood and poked around the engine bay and couldn't smell any fuel.

I'm going to look at the purge valve first, where else should I be focusing? I'll pop the rear bench out and take the pump cover off and make sure the tank lid is tight. After that I'm out of ideas.

    Thoughts?

When I had a raw fuel smell in the car, it was my HPFP. Replacing the cam follower to the latest revision and a new hpfp o-ring solved the issue for me.

In addition to the fuel smell, I had a very loud “tick” from the back of the engine (hpfp) while it was running. Fuel smell was most prominent at idle while sitting.

    Good luck!!!

Thanks! this is only after refueling thus far but I'll take a look around the HPFP, I did notice a tick this morning in the drivethru but I figured it was the purge valve.

Hope you are stopping at the first click and not flooding your charcoal canister with gas.

I always do, I ended up at a full serve yesterday and I didn't watch, I did have it over flow out the filler neck on me without the pump clicking off but it's only happened once, I've only had the car since mid Oct so I'm still learning it's quirks

that's a problem with the pump, that should never happen.. with the gas nozzle all the way in of course.. was this right before your gas smell in the cabin ?
