    Battery Replacement A4 B8.5 Coding?

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
I just finished up two projects on my car, 2015 B8.5 CAED engine, had a couple problem free days, even ran a scan with obd11, no issues. This morning go our, car won't open. Use fob, get parking lights to flash but no beep, won't open. Use key to open door, try to start, nothing. Never had a hint of weak battery, but I know it is original. So was just going to replace battery, but read I might need coding. At work, need to research this, but does anyone know whether coding is needed or avoidable? And would obd11 work, or does it need full vagcom? Thanks.

Your OBDeleven should do starter battery registration -- heck, even my old VAG401 hand-held does battery registration/adaptation. Our '14 A4Q with CAED is spec'ed with J0Z: H9 conventional flooded 000915105DL. VAG list these days is $270 (but never pay that). --g

It's an adaptation, not coding. OBDeleven, by VoltasIT, can do it if you have the subscription privilege of accessing adaptations. There is no "full vagcom". VAG-COM is a 15 year outdated name for VCDS, by Ross-Tech. VCDS can certainly access adaptations. It's just an adaptation, anything that can do adaptations can do it. The "factory" software is called ODIS.

So, decided that I would just go ahead and bite the bullet and get the battery from Audi so I was sure to get the right one ($290). Hey, last one went 8 years and nearly 200,000 miles, so that is pretty decent. Anyway, picked it up, changed out the batteries in their parking lot to avoid core charge. Went to do the long adaptation (thx Smac), and received a "(31) Function not available" error message. The old battery was listed as:
    8K0915105F VAO 350214E04N
    and the new one is:
    000915105DL CCL 930710A84O

I have pro version of OBDeleven, so that isn't the issue. I made triple sure of the 0 and O's in the new battery. I know that some people say all that is needed is to change one character of the old battery, and the car will recognize it as a new battery. So I changed it to end in 4E04M instead of 4E04N, and it accepted that. Should I not worry about it, and as long as the car knows there is a new battery and has the correct energy management system up (my understanding of the benefit of changing the old adaptation), just move on? Or is something wrong with the battery I bought (wrong kind)? Gave them my VIN# so the mistake would be on them. Here is a pic of the new battery:

VAG 000915105DL is the direct replacement for 8K0915105F, so modification of the battery serial number in the adaptation is generally sufficient for the BEM system. --g

Did you leave the second space in there between the p/n and vendor? The p/n is 11 characters, the last of which will be a space if the rev letter is only one character. Between the 11 characters of the p/n and the 3 characters of the vendor code is a single space, same as between the 3 characters of the vendor code and the 10 characters of the serial number. So your original value would have two spaces between F and V, but only one space between L and C.

It's also possible the CCL is not an acknowledged vendor code by that J533 firmware. CCL is not in the VCDS notes for that adaptation; it appears the adaptation will only accept specific vendor codes, not just any three character string. The linked battery image shows it as a Varta by JCB, so not sure why it would be vendor CCL. Seems to be a new code string that the 10 year old B8.5 J533 firmware is not aware.

As mentioned, your old battery is H9 wet flood, and your new battery is H9 wet flood, so the p/n being unchanged should be a non-concern.
