    Timing chain stretch with obdeleven?

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
Hey guys I was wondering if you really can check the timing chain stretch with obdeleven? From what I've heard you check the live data for camshaft adaptation intake bank 1 phase position? Does anyone know if this accurate and what the reading should be? I believe I read somewhere that is should be within 5 degrees and if its at 5 or over then you have a problem. I'm currently at -3.91 any insight on this would be greatly appreciated

nothing to worry about. data shows it's quite accurate. if you want there is an inspection port in the lower timing cover so you can see how extended the tensioner is and therefore the stretch. You can get your phone in and get a pic

I imagine you are on 7th or 8th notch of 11.

how many miles on the car ? you have not indicate milage or year of car..

I'm almost at 134000. Is that port on the underside of the cover? And am I correct about the 5 degrees thing? Like I should be good unless I'm over 5?

Something like that. There's a whole mega thread, see comment #42...https://www.audizine.com/forum/showt...aptation/page2

The other thing to consider is your timing chain tensioner. The early tensioner design was prone to failure. If your are at 134k miles with the original design you should consider replacing it. The later design tensioner is much more robust. The changeover occurred in the late 2012 / early 2013 models. If you aren't sure which tensioner you have, you can confirm with a quick peek in the inspection port.

So I was able to snap a few pics of the tensioner. Is the the updated one? And can you tell if it's ready to fail I don't really know what to look for

Yes that is the updated version. You are currently in the 9th of 11 adjustment grooves. Failure is not imminent, but it is time to start planning for a timing chain replacement.

Do you think I can make it through the winter? I've been planning on replacing it but my clutch is almost gone so I ordered a southbend stage2 with lwfw I'm trying to get that installed and with the cost of the clutch and labor it's cleaning me out but timing is next on the list

For sure. Just check it every six months. Once you hit -5° or the 10th notch, replace the timing chain/pads/tensioner.

You could go another year or 2 on that is my opinion with regular driving. But If you are going to be hammering on the car, as stated you might want to start looking at next spring.

absolutely nothing i would worry about though.

Awesome thanks that gives me some piece of mind. Do you think the reading on my obdeleven is accurate when comparing to the picture? It's saying cam phase is -3.87 and sometimes it's -4.00 but no higher than that

Based on the tensioner position I would say it is accurate.

yeah, I did a ton of research on clutch kits. It took me over a month to decide which one I wanted because there were so many different opinions on here regarding what people thought was a good clutch and flywheel combo. I ended up going with the South Bend stage 2 endurance, which seems to be a pretty popular and reliable choice from what I’ve read on here. I have a buddy with the ECS lightweight flywheel and he loves it. I also got a SS clutch line to get rid of that stupid clutch delay valve and a new rear main seal of course
