2018 Audi Q5 Wiring Harness replacement..

    Hey all,

I have a 2018 Audi Q5 that had a major malfunction while driving back from Idaho to Washington. Had the vehicle towed to Audi of Bellevue to have them run through it. *Quick note of the vehicle, we had purchased it in 2019 from a car dealership( Not from Audi) and had all regular maintenance done at Audi of Tacoma. Road trips from WA to CA, MT, ID with no issues. Up until now. *

After a few days they tell me that fluid had leaked into a connector housing and suggested replacing the mechatronics unit and cleaning connector. Along with this was to replace J393 due to an internal malfunction. I was quoted $6786.35 for the mechatronics and another $1793.23 for the J393 replacement. From my understanding this should fix the issue. After about another week I get a phone call saying that the wiring harness needs to be replaced and that the mentioned items above didn’t fix the problem. The tech I have been dealing with says that the wiring harness replacement will cost $27K, but Audi is willing to cover half. They quote me $13732.68 for the body harness wire overlay. I’m a little dumbfounded by this all. Has anyone dealt with this issue with the Q5? Or any suggestions? I have read that there was a similar issue someone was dealing with on the Audiworld forum.

I will claim ignorance here, these cars have quiet the system. If the wiring harness was fried and needed to be replaced, wouldn’t this have been something that should have shown up early into the diagnosis?

Sorry about your misfortune but that’s what these stealerships do. They unload the parts cannon because they can and when they misdiagnose they’ll find other issues instead of just admitting they got it wrong. Do yourself a favor and get the car out of there. Find an independent who specializes in these cars

That's a whole lotta mess. DL382 transmission mechatronics, but while we're there, let's hit the J393 too? And that price is absurd for a J393 replacement.

Audi removed the applicability notes from the J393 revisions for the B9 era so owners couldn't figure out a replacement on their own. You could always look at the one in your car and see which p/n rev it is. Pop that into parts.audiusa.com and see the J393 unit is only $500-$800, then an hour, two max, to install and program it.

"And it didn't fix anything", now they want $17k? It might be legal in that state, but they need to lay off it when working. I'd be talking to a lawyer about the scam where they already stole $8600 from you.

better yet, pop that mechatronic unit into oemvwshop and see that you can get it new for about $300.

People need to start suing these service departments when shit like this happens. rocker arm ticking? better get a whole $20k engine for no reason! Its clear that whoever worked on your car has no idea what they're doing, and honestly, it seems that most dealership techs don't. Remember, service advisors get commission when they sell these repairs.

Here's one example of how the big wire harness was saved with splicing-in factory repair wiring:

Sounds about right ($35k "damage" (repair) = totaled) and lucky for you.

I've had mixed luck with the Seattle area Audi dealers, all for different reasons, with the worst being Audi Bellevue, but that was for gross incompetence in scheduling/keeping appointments. The work they've done seemed fine to me (TBF, all under warranty).

As to the repair? It's all colossally expensive. The LED matrix head light assembly is $5,500/ea, the Sport Diff is $10,000 on and on and on it goes. Both Audi and the dealers know they have a captive audience. Plus, Audi Bellevue is in smack dab in the middle of yuppie richville so I imagine their average customer would just pay that or just dump the car and buy new.

Having taken some of the car a part a bit, modern vehicles simply not built to last - so many cheap, chintz connectors and fittings exposed to the elements.

How does your auto insurance total your car if it is a mechanical repair? Are you talking about extended warranty insurance?
