8V vs 8Y S3 how did you decide?

Shopping S3's... but its absolute torture trying to deiced on between low milage (<30k) 8V or newer 8Y.

I like the controls (actual knobs) on the 8V and the build quality seems a little better but no warranty worries me a little bit.
The 8Y would have a warranty and the newer tech is nice (for using Android Auto etc)

From what I read these cars are pretty solid. Some Water-pump issues (common to all VAG cars) and some Haldex issues.

If you were torn between the 8V an 8Y which did you choose and why?

A well maintained 8V is what you want to find if that’s quart you’re considering.

I have owned mine for 3 years, been out of warranty for 1.5 and have always had the car serviced by Audi for its regular maintenance intervals. On the rare occasion that it needed something , I’ve done the troubleshooting myself and corrected the problems. To date, the only issues I’ve had out of warranty were a camshsft magnet ($30 bucks from FCP Euro) and a leaky oil pan (bought a full replacement for $160 bucks and did it myself). Neither job was hard (although getting the gasket sealant on the new pan was a slow and tedious process: in total, whole job probably took an hour). The magnet was a joke, literally 3 screws on the side of the engine holding it in. Easily accessible and took me ten minutes. Audi wanted $600 for this

I was in same thought when I decided to buy a S3. I decided to go with a new S3 because the pricing would be almost the same due to I would have bought an extended warranty. And then newer tech.

A 2019 with only 6700 miles just popped up fairly close to me. Will go check it out this weekend. Actually worried that it may have issues from sitting around.

I bought a 2017 A3 Sline Prestige in 2020 and it only had 2046 miles. The guy did maintenance yearly. owned it for 3 yrs 3months and never had an issue. Other than the tires warn out a lil faster than normal timing which I found out it cause the car need an alignment.

Carfax says recall 69BY for the passenger seat side airbag detection issue has NOT been done. Looked at the service procedure and my head was spinning seat has to come out and be totally taken apart.
Knew this car seemed too good to be true. Guessing it was traded in so soon because the airbag warning was going off all the time. may still go check it out.
Its being sold by non-Audi dealer....so I guess they are not compelled to do the recall before the sale. Risk of passenger airbag not functioning in an accident is obviously a deal breaker.

So what? it’s a recall. It’s no expense out of your pocket and everyone here on this forum has had it done (I also had it performed when it was announced).

Are you sure you really want to buy a euro car or are you looking to buy a statement? If so, don’t buy anything used then.

No matter the S3 8V, you will have to have that recall done. I have the sport seats in my S3 and was worried about them doing the recall. But had them do it and now I don't have to worry about it.
If I were you I would get the 8V over the 8Y. I think the 8V is better looking and the interior is so simple and perfect. Just my opinion of course.

Currently driving a MK7 GTI so I sort of know what I'm getting into. Some more searching....the recall came out just as the pandemic hit and supply chain got screwed up ......we should be past all that now.
That being said I can't picture a tech that does oil changes, water pumps, etc taking the seat upholstery apart and putting it back together correctly .

Did it turn out ok? any wrinkles or scuffs after they were done?

My car had the same issue and they fixed it. Easy peasy. It’s a recall and it gets fix for free. All recalls are faults within the car which the manufacturer has to fix without responsibility of paying for it

Turned out fine. No issues. Love the MK7 GTI. I went from a 2017 MK7 GTI to a 2018 A3 Quattro to a 2016 S3 lol. S3 is a great upgrade from the GTI!

Test drove a 19 and 22 S3 this weekend. I liked both.....BUT while I was waiting for the 22 to be pulled up I kept staring at an A5 sport-back they had on the lot. Its just a sexy car. End up taking the A5 for a test drive and absolutely love it. The S3 is way quicker but the A5 is soo smooth and comfortable ....just a nice driving car. I'm a little surprised I like the comfort over performance.....guess I'm getting older.

I've got a 8V with the Sport Seats. I love it. Hands down one of the best cars I've ever had. The center console setup on the 8Y's is utter trash. I don't use my cupholders for large containers so I don't have the cupholder issue that's been mentioned. I have analog gauges instead of the digital dash and the 6 speed DSG vice the 7 speed. The only thing I hate about the car is that I don't like to listen to the noise the sunroof makes when it's cracked on the highway, probably the loudest sunroof I've ever had.

Overall I would give this car a 9.5/10. The 6 speed churning at 3k at 80 on the highway means it's into boost with almost no throttle. Gas mileage average is just under 25mpg mixed sporty driving. I haven't tuned yet nor gone "stage 2" but am planning on it. This car does everything that you need a car to do and it does it comfortably. I really dislike the front end on the 8Y and the lack of buttons/interior layout changes.

I don't know how this is a hard question. I have an 8v S3 but drool over the Y. If you can find one that has it I would want that internal led light package also.

the knobs really are nice, but the 8y shines when it comes to the engine. that little beast is completely different, and with new software and barely anything else it's as fast as an 8v rs3.. that is amazing. the interior will smell new still, and I think the new dash layout is way more modern looking. get the 8y no question about it.

That is what made me choose S3 8y…
