Do I Need new lug bolts with aftermarket wheel?

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
    Hello All,

I got a crack in my 20" wheels....after realizing how expensive the replacement is I decided to go aftermarket. I just ordered a set of 18 x 8.5 Vors TR4 wheels with +35mm offset, I will be using 255/45-18 tires to keep the identical tire specs (ht an width). During order process the site mentioned my stock lug bolts likely would not work. So my question is, will they work? if not, any suggestions on aftermarket lug bolts to get? thanks in advance for the advice, Fred

if the new wheels are conical seat, then yes.

Considering Audi uses ball seat lug bolts, no, conical seat wheels will not work with factory lug bolts. If the aftermarket wheels are not ball seat then you will need new lug bolts.

    Wait wait wait

    18"?

I'm not sure that'll clear the caliper..... Have you test fit them?

now's a great opportunity to put lug studs in, and then you can use whatever lug nuts you need to fit the new wheels...

I think a set of lug studs will legit cost as much as this entire set of wheels

I use 18's for my winter set. Nice and meaty for the inevitable potholes during winter/spring. Required a 5mm spacer to clear the front calipers though.

That said, I've had to get new set of lug bolts before too because A) the aftermarket wheels don't use caps that cover the lug bolts and the stock Audi lug bolts look kinda ugly, and B) the holes in the aftermarket wheels were too small for the head of the locking lug bolt.

these new 18’s you just bought are probably heavier than those stock 20’s you had.

also the wheels are going to be the least of your problems tracking an A6.

rotational mass....no way 20's are ever lighter than 18's...I've been to the track, always have changed wheels/tires to a lighter setup...but i get where people who dont know go ahead and tell us something we know from experience doing...

The new wheels should list whether they require a conical or a ball seat. I bought some nice wheel bolts through Amazon that were painted black and look nicer than the factory caps, in my opinion. Also, I'm not sure an 18" wheel is so much lighter than a 20" wheel since there's more physical rubber tire on an 18", would be interested to see the difference in weight between the two.
