Any reason not to get a D4 A8 TDI for a daily beater?

Looking for something a little comfier for long road trips than my sq5, and realized that d4 A8 L TDI's exist. Looking for some insight from anyone who owns one. I know they're on the rare side, but ideally would like a facelift (2015). Seeing a couple examples with 100k-ish miles going for around 20k.

Any real high mileage reliability concerns? The plan would be to buy one around 100k miles and hopefully run it for all the snowboard/bike trips and hope it makes it to 2 or 300k miles. I typically do a roughly 600 mile round trip every other weekend in the winter often in heavy snow. Being able to do it on one tank of diesel rather than 2 or 3 tanks of ethanol in my Q sounds pretty appealing. And so does the idea of the diesel powertrain being warrantied through 2025.

I'm not really concerned about maintenance costs, rather just frequency of things breaking and would prefer to not have something that'll leave me stranded. I do all my own wrenching, and haven't paid a mechanic in my decade of driving (aside from machine shop work for boring/honing and cylinder head work). anything from suspension work to engine rebuilds is really nbd for me.

Sell me on A8's before I end up buying a stupid prius or something. Thanks!

I didn’t really realize cylinder on demand was a thing with these either, 30mpg highway isn’t bad. A 600 mile trip on the tdi equates to about a $15 savings though. plus no stop for gas on the tdi, where the 4.0 would be a bit of a stretch.

I just know if I get a 4.0 it’ll maybe be a few months tops before the urge to go stage 3 overcomes me. tdi is a nice mod-repellant.

But I feel like pushing a 4.0t to 300k miles might be a little more feasible, being probably the most solid engine audi has out right now. Especially compared to my ea839 that’s assembled with toothpicks and bubblegum.

D4 TDI owner here. I gotta say, I honestly love it. Has to be one of the best cars I've ever owned. I hate flying, so I load the family up in it and take a few road trips a year. I have 130k on my 2015, and only problem I've had since I've owned it is I had an EGR cooler fault that was covered by Audi. I purchased it at 70k with the TDI dieselgate warranty till 120k. Now mine is tuned with Malone Stg2 and I'm waiting on my delete parts from across the pond. I see just over 30mpg city and pushing 40+ mpg on the open road. On our road trips, we typically see 650-700 miles to a tank.

Does suffer from normal Audi issues, like controls arms and such. Not a big deal IMO. My air suspension at 130k is working just fine, even with a little tweaking via VCDS. I'd also reommend trying to locate one with the sport package, as it come with the sport rear diff and same suspension struts as the S8.

Honestly, there is not a car out there (in the US market) that I could honestly be happy replacing it with. Sure, 4.0TT A8l are more common, S8's are faster, but I think it's the best of both worlds as far as looks, comfort, and performance.

The perfect answer. I had looked into malone and decided their stage 2 with all the deletes was the way to go. Glad you’re happy with it, when the time comes I hope it isn’t too hard to find one or I might have to settle for the 4.0. A8L D4 tdi with the 2015 facelift and sport package must be a unicorn.

Was that a thing? When I was looking I saw 0 A8s with the sports package. I love the body changes, and wouldn't mind the S8 suspension struts. I'm sure I would like the sport rear diff too, but I hear thats uber pricey when it goes out.....

I have a 2015 and love it. I've taken it from NY to Florida twice; and all over the Northeast. The last time 4 of us went down but 5 came back up and no complaints from the back seat. Diesel is typically about 50c - 75c cheaper than premium gas near me, so its a double win in that aspect. It hustles, handles better than most normal family sedans, and is quiet inside. Sometimes I wish I got the Q7 TDI w/air..... However then I would also be doing a seat swap of some manner...

I got my A8 with 35k miles two years ago and at 75k now so I'm not as high milage as Kraut yet.

Yes it was a option, mine has it. But there was no body changes with the sport package on the 2015. Well, other then wheels.
