    Aluminum oil filter housing?

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
Hey guys, while playing around on Amazon I noticed this aluminum oil filter housing. It makes a lot of sense to me since the plastic ones always warp. Has anyone ever tried one of these and if so how did it fit? The price looks good and the idea seems good but the one review on it isn't the greatest so I was looking for other opinions or if there was another manufacturer that makes this also that's been proven reliable?

Interesting.. Just need a few people to try it, to see how its works. Wont find much feedback yet, cuz it has to be brand new..
If its does work good, that's would be great for the community. Since normally its a "genuine only" item, and not cheap.

You might just have to copy and paste the description onto Amazon's search bar.
I just bought one because I'm super curious about it's quality. I love the idea.

It is newer. It first came available in May of 2023. I was thinking the same thing. It's a third the price of an oem and it can't warp. I should get it tomorrow so I'll check it out real close and give everybody some info on it.

There is one review that states they had to pay $150 to machine the housing due to imperfections and improper port sizing.. not off to a great start! Hopefully there is a revision 2.0 in the pipeline.

Yes I mentioned the one bad review in my original post. I'm curious to take a look at that breather hose connection myself. Maybe it was corrected and if not and it seems like it was poorly designed then it gets mailed back.

Thats just the filter holder. The one OP is talking about is the whole filter housing "adapter", in aluminum.

Sounds like it could be fixed by just using a silicone lower PCV hoses. Like the ECS or Spulen one.
Or maybe, after some feedback, they'll revise it. But its def a long awaited part.

Was trying to look for country of origin, I'm going to assume it chinese. Might be some legitimate manufacture out there.

Of course its "made in china". Sadly, theyre the only people coming out with things like this, for this platform anymore. Shortly, you'll see ECS coming out with one. It'll have their logo on it, and cost double, lol. Just like the coolant flange.

Alright guys it came in the mail! Here's a link to a video of me opening it up. This thing looks and feels like it's built with extreme quality. I'll check to see how the pcv hose attaches later on since I'm pressed for time right now. I'm very impressed as of right now though.

So I can confirm that the review on Amazon is accurate. The housing is manufactured with a flaw that doesn't allow the hose to go in all the way. As you can see in the pics there is a shoulder inside the pipe with a hard edge that shouldn't be there or should have been deeper in. It's very slight, probably chokes down the opening a half mm overall but it's enough. I have some tapered lathes that I am going to put in there and see if they will take that hard edge off without touching anything else. A dremel might work also but I'll try a lathe first.

The dremel worked good. I carefully removed that hard edge by putting a taper on it and the hose slides right in snug.

Thanks guys, these dremel bits worked really well. The fine grinding stone to take the hard edge off and then the abrasive polishing wheel to even it all out. I'm going to try to get it installed on Saturday. I'll post updates as I get them.

The aluminum oil filter fit great. It has a much better feel than the plastic one. I had an additional problem with putting the pcv hose back on though. Even though the hose slid right in (after I had to dremel that hard shoulder off inside the pipe) I screwed up by pushing on the brittle plastic snap ring that holds the hose in place so it of course broke. I ended up just upgrading to the ECS silicone hose and that fit right on perfectly and won't ever break. I've only put 10 miles on the new housing so far but it's not leaking or mixing coolant and oil so I'll keep going with it and if I have any bad news I'll update the thread.

Nice. Did you have to drain any oil or coolant entirely to replace the housing?

Yes I did. I drained the coolant from the valve under the radiator and I drained all the oil from the pan. I wanted to do an oil change anyhow so that part worked out well. My coolant was newer also so I just captured that and put it right back in afterwards.

I was just thinking about doing it by letting the oil off the filter housing with a tube and empty the coolant expansion tank. Not sure if that'll work, in theory it should. Anyone done it this way before?.

I guess you could but I would think it'll be a little messy. The oil filter housing is below a lot of the radiator so I would think that additional coolant in the radiator will siphon back out. I only had a little coolant and oil fall out once I unbolted the housing so it was a pretty clean job.

Just drain the coolant, and filter, and change oil afterwards.

Has anyone tried using a brake wheel cylinder stone hone? They are spring loaded and would provide even pressure 360 degrees.

I don't think anyone has tried anything else other than me. It's a very new item. It might work. Worse case scenario either return it back to amazon or buy the ECS silicone hose which attaches firmly to the outside without a problem.

Latest update on new aluminum oil filter housing. I've put 300 miles on it which isn't a lot but I don't drive much. So far it's still working with no problems. No leaking oil and the coolant and engine oil are not mixing. I'm still happy with the purchase.

    Sounds good.
Nice to have a cheaper options, that works. Even better that its metal.
If it didn't just install a new genuine unit recently, id be trying one. But I got it cheap.

Cool. Never thought of an aluminum or metal part like that. Hope it holds up well and you'll be set.
I'm waiting to install mine. Don't know when but I'm ready. Probably do it when I tackle the timing belt and water pump, not any time soon though. Also got the hose to the oil cooler too just in case. Included the part # if anyone's interested.

I'm waiting to install mine. Don't know when but I'm ready. Probably do it when I tackle the timing belt and water pump, not any time soon though. Also got the hose to the oil cooler too just in case. Included the part # if anyone's interested.

Cool, just make sure you don't over tighten the bottom cup onto the housing. There are 2 marks that you line up to know you've tightened it correctly. You shouldn't even need tools to do it. If you go much past those marks you put a lot of strain on the seal inbetween the housing and the engine which can cause it to leak. Line up the marks then leave it alone.
