New 8Y RS3 Owner Here - Need Help with Torque Splitter Settings

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
New to RS3 but not new to performance cars. I am privileged to own 2023 Audi R8, 2023 Z06, various 981/718/991 Porsches, and many others.

The RS3 is my practical sporty car. I’m not big on drifts and purposeful oversteer, but I am big on safe canyon carving at or near the limit; and I’m trying to learn about the the Torque Splitter settings. The Owner’s Manual gives ZERO description of what the Torque Splitter settings “comfort,” “balanced,” and “dynamic” mean in terms of how the Torque Splitter is intended by Audi to perform in that setting.

There is plenty of Audi press material out there explaining what the Torque Splitter does, so I know what it does.

Can someone please unpack observations he’s made about the three different Torque Splitter settings and also explain what Audi’s intention was here insofar as how they tuned the Torque Splitter to perform in each of those three settings? I do like to use RS Individual mode since the engine sound really seems to come alive in the RS modes.

    Thanks in advance!

Not sure what you are familiar with so excuse me if some of this is a rehash for you.

The current RS3 is capable of sending 50% of its power to the rear wheels. Where the torque splitter comes in is it can send 100% of the power that it sent to the rear to a single rear tire. So under hard corners it will send more power to the outside tire to help rotate the rear end and combat understeer. How much of that power is sent to the rear end, or a single tire in the rear, is dictated on the torque splitter mode you are in with comfort being the least aggressive and RS Torque Rear being the most aggressive allowing you to really fling the rear end around and drift if you push it and the others fall somewhere in the middle.

This page does a pretty good job of describing it, probably better than I can: https://www.audi-mediacenter.com/en/...udi-rs-3-14067

Specifically the "How is the torque splitter integrated into the driving dynamics system?" section. But all the info on that page is good to read to better understand some of the systems on the car.

He's asking about the new RS3 not the 8v.

I think this is what he was looking for:

Five characteristic curves – Comfort/Efficiency, Auto, Dynamic, RS Performance, and RS Torque Rear – are saved in the system.

In this context, engine power is distributed to all four wheels in the Comfort/Efficiency modes, with priority given to the front axle.
In Auto mode, torque distribution is balanced, which means that the RS 3 neither understeers nor oversteers.
Dynamic mode, on the other hand, tends to transmit as much drive torque as possible to the rear axle – for maximum agility and increased dynamics.
This is taken to perfection in RS Torque Rear mode, which allows drivers to perform controlled drifts on closed roads.

IMO Dynamic mode is for the safe canyon carving, where RS Torque Rear is more for the adventure seeker

In my experience tracking it, only Torque Rear will really throw the rear out on power. It will come around on corner entry in the other modes if you go in hot though. My guess is more of that power going rear and to the outside wheel.

This is probably more about the drive modes honestly. If you have it on individual but with the normal drive (not sport, doesn't hold revs), then it will be quiet, even on the Present setting for exhaust. Dynamic is kinda an in-between that you can't set on the individual mode unfortunately.
