    whats your favorite/best sounding S4 exhaust ??

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
I just bought another B8.5 car (my 3rd one I've owned).

Just got the car flashed, air intake, dual pulley, and ultracharger done.

My other 2 cars were APR exhaust (which is Corsa), and I loved the sound, but they took a lot of finesse to get them to fit right. I dont know if Corsa still makes the exhaust.

All of my setups were always touring/with resonators. I drive a lot on the highway and can't take the droning. (Corsa was great for not droning at all).

    Lots of people using AWE.

    My tuner recommended Milltek

    What do you guys like?

Right now I have non-resonated downpipes (CTS) and 034 Xpipe with the stock dual mufflers and I absolutely love the tone. Quiet in a parking lot but loud at WOT, which is usually kind of my goal with exhaust.

Personally, Polo Performance hands down bar none.

Drone is subjective but I feel like I don't experience any drone with mine. Nice deep mellow tone. Decently quiet when you're not getting on it, nice and loud when 6ou do get on it

    POLO PERFORMANCE!

has a very mellow "v8 wubwubwub" at idle and sounds amazing cruising, and like a beast skyline when you are wot!
i was absolutely sold on the 'deceleration burble'.

ive also owned the popular 'awwww touring'. that sounds good too, but its a toned down version of what greatness polo does.

If you plan on keeping your cats, Polo Performance. And there is no debate. It is the best sounding exhaust, without question.

When I was trading my S4 in, I gave away my Polo to someone with test pipes and let me tell you... that was not good. I'd imagine you'd have to wear ear protection just to cruise around town.

Also, AWE exhaust notoriously fit like shit. One tip is always crooked/sagging.

Can you guys give a little more insight about the drone? I drive a ton on the highway at 75-85mph, and that speed on these cars seems to be right where the RPM falls to drone a lot (with a 6spd manual).

I think the Polo sounds great. If it doesnt drone a lot, I think I am going to order one.

That’s probably because it’s older, I think their quality went down once they started making exhausts for every car brand under the sun. My buddy runs a shop and he has a helluva time getting them to fit right, even non-euro cars. He had issues with his own exhaust on his SQ5 where it would come lose and one side would sag.

I personally want to say there's no drone. Just being cautious in saying that becauee Drone does have a subjective component to it.

    whats your favorite/best sounding S4 exhaust ??

    Awe touring.
Had it with oe downpipes, but not loud enough. Removed resonators, was raspy and droned but was louder.
    Installed ecs DP’s.
Very little drone, a bit raspy in lower rpm when mashing the gas.
    Otherwise sounds very good.

Fitment is fine, takes a bit to make perfect.
I’ve read that polo fitment can be a pain.

I’ve heard miltek, it’s not loud.
    I’ve heard Borla, was ok.

Exhaust sound is so subjective though.
Some exhaust just amplify the stock noise, some actually produce a certain tone.

Have not heard the ecs exhaust.

I had some issues with the passenger side tips. A strategically placed stainless steel zip tie on an exhaust hanger fixed that issue for good.

My update on the Polo/Solo Exhaust:

If I had to do it all over again I would have done a different exhaust.

The first issue is that it fit like shit. Where the cat pipes attach to the downpipes, the Polo was about 1.5-2 inches too short on both sides. Also the tail pipe section was a little short on both sides and the tips didn't line up correctly once everything was corrected. It wasnt anything super serious, it just took a lot more time a welder (and more money on my end, to get it to fit right) at my buddies shop.

The other issue I have with it, and I wish I knew about it before purchasing, is that although the exhaust definitley sounds better then any other one I've heard on a S4, the droning at 70-85mph is unbearable. I drive a lot on the highway for my work commute, almost 2 hours a day in the car at 70-85mph. So like 95% of when I am driving at 70-85mph its right at its loudest. I wish I had known that before buying but theres not much I can do about it now. I have to switch things up for sure though, its not something I can live with every day.

My final plan is to leave the whole exhaust on as sent from the factory and massaged to custom fit, and I am going to add a set of Corsa mufflers right before the tips on the very rear of the system. Corsa makes a product (APR use to use it for their exhausts), that essentially uses a technology in the muffler to tune the paths of the exhaust gases in a way that cancels out the droning (it's called Corsa RSC (reflective sound cancelling). I am going to give it a shot at doing that, if that doesn't work I am going to have to replace the system and find a cat-back that's a little bite toned down. I actually feel really strongly about the Corsa mufflers though. I had them on 2 of my other 4 S4's that I have owned and there was zero cabin noise.

If my car was more of a weekend only car, or a 2-3 day a week commuter, that wasnt being driven at a steady speed daily I'm sure I'd be way happier with it.

Thanks for recommending Polo to me guys. I love the sound, I just have to get the droning down. I'll let everyone know what happens once the Corsa Mufflers are on.

I’m fairly certain that the “u-pipes” near the tips are used to tune out drone. You need to adjust them to find your sweet spot. Unless you had a welder weld them in place, in which case you kinda ruined the main selling point of the exhaust. It’s meant to be tunable to your situation.

AWE Touring with Resonated DP is perfect with stock cats. Quiet until you get on it, it doesn’t sounds like crap (not ricey), and no droning on DCT. IE DP + throttle w/IE intake brings out the whine too 🥹

Thanks for the tip, I have adjusted it 6-7 times already and can't find a happy spot where it doesn't drone. I love the sound of the Polo/Solo Exhaust, it's just becoming a little unbearable unless I can find a way to make it stop droning. I may switch my setup if I can't quiet down the droning.

That sucks, sorry to hear that. Exhaust drone is the easiest way to ruin a car. Maybe where the center x-pipe is, you could get a shop to weld in one of those magnaflow resonated x-pipes? 11385 I think the part number is. Or 11386 for 2.5” since I’m not sure the pipe diameter on the polo. Might be worth a try to cut down drone.

I still have cats, I am manual, and the droning is driving me crazy.

It's a shame because I love the sound of the exhaust. My last ditch effort will be to add a set of mufflers (probably corsa) to the Polo exhaust and hope it doesnt kill the sound.

No disrespect to Todd and AWE, but on the S4 I don't love the sound of their exhaust. (Many other exhausts for other cars they make sound fabulous).

The past 2 B8.5 S4's I owned had the APR full exhaust and the tone and sound was great on that setup. They don't make it anymore though and I can't find one used anywhere. :(

For those curious about the ECS X-Pipe downpipe kit, I just installed it. This is the best I could do quickly this morning.

    https://youtube.com/shorts/e2YJS54pg...15GOJwxsUHnOjx

I always drive in Dynamic. I’m DSG and when in “D” it is quiet and mellow as long as you’re cruising. No real drone to speak of. When in “S” it is droney and raspy. It’s very RPM dependent of course. Gives it that higher pitched “GTR”ish sound. It’s evidently very loud at WOT from what I’m told. I will try to get some video from outside the car to upload.

From what I have heard online, the Borla sounds damn good on these cars.

It reminds me of the R32 sounds, about perfect to me.

I bought the Corsa system from CSP racing in July of 2021. Corsa had already quit making these, but they still built me one. It took a couple months to get it tho. They still have it on their website and says to email for availability. Worth a try!
