Towing module SQ5 vs. Q5 part number

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
Adding a hitch to my B8 SQ5, plan to use OEM control module. In searching parts numbers, 8K0907383D (trailer control module) it only shows that it works for the Q5. Can anyone confirm that it will work on the SQ5 platform.
Already have 8R0971541C (Harness) and 8R0907297A (bracket) on the way. Also have the OBDeleven list of coding ready to go from another thread. Appreciate any insight into this.

You will need to source this for your OEM trailer control module, 8K0907383E, possibly from eBay in europe.

Some of these threads might help you along.

I recently installed a used Porsche Macan hitch to my 2016 Audi SQ5, fit exactly like it should from the factory (the part number is actually an Audi Nr. 8R0800491A). Plan to only use for eBikes, so no need for full trailer lighting. I guess I could install all that later if needed.

Thank you. I currently have a stealth hitch, also used for bikes (Usually two MTB at a time). Works great and I like that you can completely hide it when not in use. Adding the tow kit from stealth, and do not want to use the splice in wiring.
I have seen ref to 8K0907383E, but ECS guys are saying that 8K0907383D would work. Looks like 8K0907383E wouldn't bee that hard to source. Appreciate the info!

    The correct trailer control module for the B8 Q5 is 8K0 907 383 D. 8K0 907 383 E is for the B8 A4/A5.
    SQ5 is a Q5.

To clarify my recommendation of 8K0907383E, this is what trailer module most have used when using the 4L0971124F (Q7) wiring harness in the above links I provided.

The E unit has only two plugs, the D unit has three plugs. The D unit supports the F355 lock bolt contact switch and the trailer hitch locked/unlocked indicator. Seems like it was a later enhancement. The revision history of the two-socket unit is _ > A > B > E. The revision history of the three-socket unit is C > D. If you're not implementing this feature, the E unit should be sufficient. But that also means not using the actual Q5 harness.

If you look at the proper harness for the Q5, https://www.partscolumbusaudi.com/p/...R0971541C.html , the 17-pin plug is the inside connection to the interior harness and the 3-pin plug on the outside is to the F355 unit.

There seems to be less than zero information about this F355 lock bolt contact switch. Someone with an actual factory equipped towing Q5 would need to look at see where this plug goes. Assuming it's even relevant to the tow hitches permitted in the US market.

@Smac770 – Correct for the D unit having three plugs and being 17pin. It looks like the lock indicator might have been an RoW (rest of world) Europe only fitment?

I did a quick scan on eBay USA for a Q5 trailer hitch and found a complete trailer hitch take-off kit with wiring harness and ECU unit. This was labeled to fit 2009-2017 Audi Q5.

    Trailer hitch – 8R0800491A
Trailer ECU module – 4E0907383C (the plot thickens! Evidently other ECU module units were used by Audi and can work.)
Trailer wiring harness – can't read the part number, but it is correct for a two plug ECU module unit with the two wire smaller end plug.

Maybe a search on eBay Germany for similar take-off kit with all parts to see what is included for RoW spec will help?

Photos below are from eBay listing in the US.

The 4E0... unit is for the 4E A8 (D3), and also used on the 4L Q7. The Q7 also had a 4L0... unit, that was used instead if equipped with the power folding hitch (1D9). Would not have been equipped on a Q5 from the factory.

The 4E0... unit is currently rev J.
The 4L0... unit is currently rev D.
The 8K0... units are currently rev D (3-socket for the Q5) and rev E (2-socket for the A4/A5).

I don't see the tow hitch in the US order guide for the Q5 until MY11, and even then it's a port installed retrofit. And stayed that way for the US for the rest of the B8 Q5 years. Seems maybe B9 Q5 finally got it factory installed for NAR.

They probably just used the Q7 module thinking "same enough". And the Q5 lock pin switch is probably specific to the not-US-allowed hitches or such.

The pictures in the Audi documentation for the MY11 port installed retrofit kit show the 8K0...B control unit. This is the predecessor to the rev E, and is the 2-socket unit. So I take it those throwing the 4L0... unit on were either MY09 or MY10 years, or someone just going their own route to get it done, replicating the Q7 config on their Q5.

Ok, the 3-pin F355 plug is definitely specific to the swivel hitch. Why the Q5 has it but the A4/A5 and Q7 do not, who knows.

    from https://www.ebay.de/itm/126027891142

    from https://www.motivauto.pt/en/Detalhe/...015-2016-2017#

So the 8K0...D would only be necessary if you had that specific kind of tow hitch, which isn't US legal anyway. So any US market retrofit can make do with the 8K0...E unit (and appropriately matching wiring harness).

Why Audi couldn't document this appropriately in the parts catalog, ....

From my research, Q5 models >2020 have a four port controller module. The 4 th port connects to the swivel hitch electronics.
Port a. 17/16 pin harness to trailer.
Port b. Power from car to module
    Port c. CAN gateway
    Port d. Swivel hitch activation

No idea about the B9 Q5 (type FY, aka "Mk2 Q5", US MY18+). This forum is about the B8 Q5 (type 8R, aka "Mk1 Q5", US MY09-MY17), thus the discussion of the relevant trailer modules of that time. Assessing the module(s) in the MLBevo era (4M Q7 onward), that would be a whole new starting from scratch research project.

Ah, that's a bit more informative of what we were suppose to make of your original post. :-)

But to assume an MLBevo era control module would work as intended in a MLB era vehicle, probably better to just get an era appropriate module.

The MLBevo era units are also quite a convolution. It appears the B9.0 vehicles have settled to 4M0 907 383 F, while the B9.5 vehicles have settled to 8W5 907 383 D. Both are 4-plug units: 24-pin for the trailer harness, 6-pin for power/ground, 10-pin for vehicle connections, second 10-pin for the control button for the electric folding hitch (not US legal). What's interesting is all the 8W1 units are now disco here, but some still active for EU. And the 4M Q7 facelift actually has some 8W0 units spec'd for it (but not for the actual type 8W vehicles?), which are 3-plug units, lacking the second 10-pin since that's unnecessary if you don't have the power folding hitch. Similar to the 3-plug 8K0...D vs. the 2-plug 8K0...E (where the only use of the third plug is to connect the warning lamps for hitch locked/unlocked, I presume the red and green lights we see in this video - youtu.be/Uz2A-UWGWUM and not relevant to non-swivel implementations).

    Interesting prices on parts.audiusa.com:
    B9.0 4M0 907 383 F - $500
    B9.5 8W5 907 383 D - $600

    4M GP1 8W0 907 383 A - $230
    4M GP1 8W0 907 383 C - $315
    4M GP1 8W0 907 383 D - $430

    B8 EU Q5 8K0 807 383 D - $525
    B8 A4/A5 8K0 907 383 E - $480

You can't use the Q7 module, you need to use a B8 module. My factory hitch from Audi came with 8K0907383E module, for my brothers Q5 on a whim I bought 8K0907383 from Europe and installed it and coded it for NA and it works, I also bought 8K0907383A from Europe at the same time and installed and coded that in my allroad. It appears any of the B8 modules will take North American coding. There is a breakdown pdf floating around of a Q7 harness and how to make your own for cheap, thats what I did with my brothers Q5 and my allroad only I made a flat 4 pin harness since neither of us need the 7 pin plug.
