    Sport Exhaust Tip Installation

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
Anyone else not too mechanically savvy install these yourself? Was it hard or would you recommend me just taking to an exhaust shop? I’ve seen the video on YouTube but would like to hear a members personal experience doing the install. Thx!

I did mine, it just takes some patience and using the right tools. Take your time cutting the valance because that plastic they used marks very easily. Driver side is a bit of a pain to align the spacing but again take your time. Also use WD40 at the connection point to help with adjusting each side. HMU if you have additional questions.

Highly recommended - not only do they look great they notably increase sound owing to the internal perforation features. That said, IME, it's a significant amount of work to make it all look right. Luckily though, no special skills or tools needed - just time and patience. It took me some 6+ hours and I am quite mechanically inclined TBH. DO NOT take it to an exhaust shop because they won't take the time to make it look right. This is how NOT to do this install. He does it quick, and the normie won't see it as a hack job but an enthusiast will cringe at this (explained below): https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2aw_iZ_ynLA

Firstly, as stated above, the rear valence is fragile, plus does not have clear cut lines through the bottom portion. See time time stamp at 1:58 - 3:00 in the above hack video. This will look terrible. I has to use a combination of a drill (for pilot holes), mini hand saw, Dremel and then finally a file. I followed the outline of the fake exhaust tip bracket, leaving the bottom portion of the valence intact:

Second, as stated (and shown) above (including in the video above at 9:15), the driver side tip is not level. Audi angles the driver side muffler exit upwards which causes this issue (see below). My bet is Audi does this to prevent condensation from accumulating at the bottom of the exhaust flap, the corrosion of which could jam it, and if the ECU detects a jam, it can cut power to prevent overheating the cat. The best solution I could come up with was to use vice grips to bend the exit, albeit a little bit a time, downward. It took a couple of hours to bend/check/rebend to get it level:

Do not leave the bottom portion, it is not supposed to touch the tips at all as it could melt. If you need the PDF instructions, I can provide them and it says to cut all the way thru as does the video linked above.

It looks like it touches from that angle but does not - spent a lot of time ensuring that. Have had the tips on since new (= for ~55k very hard (hot!) miles). The tips swing a bit left to right but not up and down, so no melting as shown. IMO the video link above is a cringe hack job and exactly how NOT to do it (lol at using a sawzall).

I would cut through the lower valence but it'd look awful as there are no clear cut/mold/feature lines to do so plus the plastic is flimsy. If one is bound and determined, to do it properly, one will need to create a fixture for each cut to make it look good (and probably remove the rear valence to do it all).

It's good Audi provided the tips as an aftermarket add-on, and they look and sound fantastic, but Audi done goofed to a fair extent the implementation.

It's not a difficult install, but if you're not too mechanically savvy and/or you have to go out and buy tools to install it, I would just go to a local independent Audi shop or exhaust place.

They are for the B9.5. The facelift bumper is meant to be cut out for them.

I've always wondered if there was a way to replace the lower black portion on the B9 bumper with the B9.5 part...then do the tip installation. The shape of it looks the same.

Wonder if someone with access to parts (Mops?) has tried that before.

I'd be tempted to do it, if I knew it would work.

Question to the gang on this thread. My car came with the performance exhaust installed…by someone on a Friday, after 2 for 1 happy hour.

Can you adjust the tips after they are installed? Maybe by bending the hangar? I’m not clear if it’s clamped? if so adjusting shouldn’t be crazy. I’d rather not spend the next few years with my head cocked on an angle so it looks ok.

See my post above from 7/8. Betcha dollars to donuts the left (USDM driver) side tip is canted clockwise a bit. This is by design unfortunately.

Yes, each tip has a clamp and hanger, but the clamp is beefy and the pipe even beefier - there's a bit of adjustment but not even remotely enough to fix the cant problem. If this is your problem you have to bend downward the stub exiting the driver side of the muffler (a fairly big PITA - again, see my post).

    There is a clamp + hanger on each side, and you can loosen them to readjust the tips (a bit);

I had to readjust mine a couple times to get them aligned to my liking, and all of the crooked sports exhaust tips installations I've seen have been dealership installed...

I wonder, would these work on a B9.5 Q5 with s-line bumper? Cutouts in the bumper look the same but not sure about the muffler alignment.

The tips are an over expensive oem part from Audi that they should have done from the factory. I got mine second hand brand new essentially from a guy on here that they messed up his order chrome vs black tips. I have chrome tips. They look great. I will also say they do increase the sound. I installed them my self in my driveway no lift in an hour . It was cut and clamp. Super easy. Longest part trying to get tips to not look slanted. Mine look great to me. I saw above about long installs no way soo insanely easy. Looks great too. I also did my own turbo swap too so maybe from a different perspective.

I wish exhaust companies like FI, AWE, Valetronic, and AKro would make an exhaust that fits in our already cut out holes for our port installed $1400 tipped exhausts, we have the space now that its cut, and they may give us tips that are alogned correctly. saddest part of my exhaust is, according to Audi dealer near me it cant be fixed. left will always be sunken in a bit. BIG SAD.

Do you have any clue if it would fit the Q5 B9.5 ?

I've been searching around and can't fin anything available besides some options on Alibaba that require a valence replacement.

Even in the U.S. it's overpriced for what they are (when the car should have just come with them stock)... But it was the best option for me to get rid of the "fake" exhaust tips and still retain the valve for when it comes time to sell the car.

You think a muffler shop can cut the pipe where the exhaust angles down and do a a bend with a mandrel and do weld on a straight extension?. Can't see spending almost $3000cdn for a damn muffler tip extension.

Uffda $2,500 is steep - can't you order from a US dealer? $1,200 IMO is totally worth it.

A muffler shop could do all sorts of things but likely won't look/fit/sound as good as these tips.

I got tips from Alibaba and a local shop installed it. They said it wasn't the easiest install, as they needed to fabricate to get that angle, and given I still have the valves and are fully functional. Paid in total about $500-600, half for tips and half for install.

Personally I think it looks better than the OEM one. Unfortunately the android app doesn't let me upload a pic. Could do later from laptop though.

Incorrect in this case - these tips hugely change exhaust note - much deeper and rumblier and a bit louder. In fact, it's the best sounding exhaust I've ever heard on the EA839 3.0T and the maximum amount of tolerable noise level and still show respect for your fellow citizens. These tips are in effect mini resonators.
