C8 RS6 Break Replacement Advice Please

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
Goooooooood Morning fellow Audi Owners...Took my car in for service on friday for what might be the dreaded alternator issue some have expereienced...super awesome! Anyway, while diagnosing the issue at hand, service advisor recommended all new brakes for 11,780 some odd dollars. Super dope! 22k miles on the odo and I don't feel any shuttering or vibration while braking, so taking their advice with a grain of salt, however, I think they're hosing me on the parts cost because labor is only 680 out of that nearly 12k cost. Anyone have this repair done (front and rears) in the south florida area that could share their cost experience? Anyone go non-dealer? Anyone go aftermarket on the pads and rotors? Any and all advice would be welcomed. Also, it non-ceramic steel brakes.

    Kind Regards,

    CM

This is not uncommon for steel brakes on the C7 platform, not sure about the C8. The brake prices for both are hideously expensive though even though they are just steel. If you had CCBs you likely wouldn't be replacing yet but if you needed to it would easily be double that cost.

Steel rotors and pads are about 4k in parts (genuineaudiparts.com). Labor sounds right, if not a little high at $700 for all four corners. Not sure where the extra 7k is coming from.

Are RacingBrake's iron or CCB conversion kits ready?

I got quoted about $8k for mine about 9 months ago. Front pads + rotors were about 4k total in parts with rears being about 3k and the rest labor. It is pretty insane. I bought the brake package at purchase but given others experience with it you CANNOT USE IT unless the pad warning light is on and even then dealer will only replace brakes on the axel for which the pad warning was triggered. So even if the dealer recommends new brakes, don't pull that trigger if you bought the brake package until that pad warning light is on. FWIW, my remaining pad thickness seems to change from service to service...and not linearly downward lol. So I trust the car to tell me time for brakes moreso than a tech measuring pad depth just to check items off the checklist.

Aftermarket options are still very thin and not the easiest to source for whatever reason.

I was definitely going to add the brake package but now it sounds like it may not be easy to actually use it which is concerning.

Also an expiration too. IIRC someone said theirs was 3 years. Mine is 5. Probably a "what you want and pay for" type deal but the expiration bit was definitely not mentioned to me so might be worth asking when you purchase. 5 years seems reasonable for a steelies brake replacement 3 less so.

Are they saying that all 4 corners need new pads and rotors replaced at 22k miles as I'd expect pads at that but new rotors seems unusual as ever other performance car I've has the rotors lasted much longer than the pads and the rears typically lasted longer than the front?

Looks like it’s closer to 4500, which is flat stupid. Someone needs to make an aftermarket solution. These cars have been out plenty of years now. The stock pads absolutely suck. They crumble apart when subjected to heat & dust like crazy. I don’t mind one of these two as a compromise, but the worst of both is unacceptable.

Not sure if anyone has pulled the trigger with these folks yet. Kit is showing pre-order and no ETA on availability/delivery no matter how it is configured (front only / rear only / both / ccb to iron conversion)

That isn’t much better than stock price wise. It is $3,800 for pads and rotors.

However, it is about 30 pounds lighter of rotational mass, which is nice. For comparison, the factory CCB’s are about 75 lbs lighter than the iron brakes.

I spoke to RacingBrake. The front iron rotors are in stock. They are waiting on the rear hats to be manufactured. No ETA but they said that they would expedite production if orders get placed.

ETA: RB stuff is, in my experience, very high quality and will likely better than OEM here.

Lets get a group buy going for RB's CCB replacement for OEM steels??

I have never encountered this company before. Seems they have a few reasonably priced options to move from iron -> CCB and vice versa. Their full CCB replacement cost is about half of what the price range would be at dealer. https://racingbrake.com/au-crk-c8-440-370/

I think the ones you linked are for replacement of OEM carbon ceramics with a 440mm front rotor. They have a different kit (that is a few hundred dollars cheaper) that is for replacement of iron brakes with ceramic brakes using a 420mm front rotor and retains the factory calipers for iron brakes.

Just a thought but if Audi can’t source CCBs where is this company getting them?

Yes, thats right. I have CCB's now and its good to know there are alternatives other than the dealer to replace CCB's when they are required.

Has anyone used the brake package successfully in the last few months? Unless the pricing has gone down on brake replacement it still seems like a decent investment.

Not that I have seen post here. My contract expires in 2025 so I plan to be a bit more... brake intensive in 2024 to ensure I get my money's worth out of the coverage.

It does seem worth buying the mechanic a drink or 2 before it expires!!
