How many of you are buying extended warranties or Audi Pure Protection?

    Hi folks,

I've been out of the Audi scene for awhile but have been looking to get back in one, specifically a B9 SQ5 with S Sports package. It seems like these have been pretty bullet proof from what I've read, but how many of you have purchased an extended warranty and were glad you did? I've been driving Toyota Tacoma's the past 12 years and I honestly wouldn't ever think to add one to these trucks because they are the epitome of reliability. I'm planning to purchase a used one (2019-2020 with less than 30k miles on it) and plan to drive it for the next 4-5 years. I drive less than 10k miles a year, but I"m curious if I should invest the money for an extended warranty. Whether that be a Audi Pure Protection or a 3rd party company. Your thoughts and wisdom is much appreciated.

I was in the same boat as you, but I actually found a CPO 2020 SQ5 for a good price and decent miles, so I am happy with the warranty situation. One year left on factory warranty and car had 31k miles, then the normally 2 years or 100k for the CPO warranty. But there were not many CPOs SQ5s when I was shopping, was about to buy one without CPO for the same price I paid for the one with CPO.

Gotcha, I've been watching these on/off for the past 6 months to a year and I feel like I rarely see a CPO available, let alone one with the color + options I'm looking for. If I can find one still under the factory warranty I can at least add the Audi Pure Protection, otherwise I'm looking at a 3rd party warranty company if I choose to buy an extended warranty. Just wondering if it's worth it, or just take the risk. I know parts aren't cheap, and one repair could pay for the warranty. It's a gamble, I get it, just curious what the overall experience has been with these cars.

I was a bit scared with the SQ5 it being my first ze German car and all (500,000+ total miles on my three previous Japanese cars and nary a warranty claim and extremely few repairs) and I got suckered into both a dealer network (AutoNation) extended warranty and Audi Care. The dealers (Audi Bellevue and Audi Lynnwood) managed to turn both into scams. I need a bit more info and then plan on suing Audi Bellevue (long-ish story, will wait till it's resolved one way or another). I say stay away from those dealers. Audi Seattle seems the best in the area albeit my experience with them is limited.

Anyway, a bit more to your real question: the B9/9.5 SQ5 does seem both more reliable and durable than the average German car, and Audis are generally IME the best of the Germans. I still would not own it past say 5-6 years and 100,000 miles. For example, on the underside of the vehicle and in the engine compartment and front bumper area, there is endless flimsy plastic and exposed vacuum and electrical connectors - all very fragile and cheap looking/feeling to me. My previous vehicle (G37x sedan) was built like a goddamned main battle tank in comparison (and I got 10 years and 185,000 miles virtually trouble free out of it).

No, I haven't purchased extended warranties on my RS3 or wife's SQ5. In my experience the dealership will just deny there is anything wrong with the car unless there's a smoking crater in the engine. I've heard "we cannot replicate the problem" enough time to realize warranties are overrated.

I get the third party warranty. That allows me to take it my mechanic and then they deal with getting paid. So far, so good.

Thanks for your input, I agree on the Auto Nation network and have heard similar dissatisfaction from others. My Step-Dad bought a used Macan from Auto Nation Bellevue and added an extended Warranty (through Porsche I believe) and it's already paid for itself. So far is overall experience has been pretty good. Not really a good comparison to the SQ5 even though they share the same platform. University Audi (Lynnwood/Seattle) is definitely a better organization in my opinion to work with just because it's a local ownership. I did do a test drive with them (Audi Lynnwood) recently and they were great to work with, unfortunately it just wasn't a car I wanted to pursue just because of some minor things that bugged me (cosmetically). I've got another one in my sights, fingers crossed we can make a deal that I'm happy with. It's got a little less than a year on the factory warranty, which gives me the option to add the Audi Pure Protection. I may actually call a few Audi dealers and talk to a few of the Service Advisors and pick their brain and get their .02 on the Pure Protection warranty.

Have you had to use it much? And which 3rd party warranty company did you go with?
