    DIY: A/C Compressor Bearing Replacement

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
    Bearing: 35mm (inside) x 52mm (outside) x 22mm (thickness). NSK 35BD5222DFX7 (https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0...?ie=UTF8&psc=1)

I originally ordered a different bearing that did not fit (it was a part # referenced in a random thread I found - hit me up if you need this bearing). NSK 30BD5222DUM6 (https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0...?ie=UTF8&psc=1

*There may be different bearings used across the years. My Avant is a 2001.5MY*

My bearing was extremely loud - to the point that i just bypassed it. Compressor still worked, so wanted to replace just the bearing.

Benefits over a new compressor: can be done in the car, do not have to evacuate refrigerant, $$$ saved

    Steps:

    1. Remove center bolt to remove top cover (there is a washer behind this cover that spaces it from the nose of the shaft - don't lost it)

    2. Remove snap ring and pulley

    3. On the backside of the pulley cover, there are 6 indents that hold the bearing in place. Take your dremel or weapon of choice and grind those down.

    4. Press the old bearing out & use old bearing to press new bearing in.

Install in reverse order. I used a little blue loctite on the center bolt. It's whisper quiet now.

My car has been on jack stands for 10 months so can't comment on longevity or operation tbh (read some gossip about tight clearances required to engage/disengage compressor that I haven't tested yet), but so far so good.

Need more write ups like this on here! Awesome stuff! And I see you've got the same trusty harbor freight press as me haha. Just hopefully yours didn't leak oil from day 1 like mine.
