    S7 Upgrade Thoughts

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
Hello. I understand there are a million threads regarding S7 upgrades, but wanted to ask specific questions about a few items. 1. Any direct replacement Turbo(s) (RS7/aftermarket and do all or any will require Engine and/or TCU tune? 2. Intake and Exhaust are must or highly recommended with any mods? 3. Do not want meth type high(er) maintenance setups as not going to track or street racing. As a note car has 90K with new engine at 86.5K and new Turbos at 68K from Audi. No rush but want to know best path forward. Much appreciated.

So the engine has 4k miles and the turbos have 22k miles? Well shit.
Best path forward... remove the oil screen on the turbo feed lines, get a stage 1 tune and enjoy. There are lots of aftermarket turbos out there. You can run RS7 turbos without a tune and be fine. The engine won't know the difference. It will make the same amount of boost between the two on a stock or stage 1 file. Stage 1 on the DS1 is 21psi. Both achieve that #
For reference, my stage 1 DS1 tuned c7 s6 made just over 500whp with stock turbos, intakes and downpipes, and much more power with the stage 3 setup it has now. I swapped over to SRM RS7 turbos, SRM intakes and some catless downpipes. The difference was ridiculous, but let's be honest, most people don't need much more than 500whp on the street. I however am not "most people"

IMO, the best bang for the buck is a stage 1 tune running an e85 map, along with a TCU tune.. You can get all of that packaged through Integrated Engineering, or piece meal through other vendors.

I'd say go for an intake and stage 1 tune now and enjoy that power gain until you become bored. You'd definitely need an ECU tune, and I believe TCU is recommended if not required. If you're wanting to do turbos, i'd recommend checking out JHM. A bit more than SRM, but they're Garrett's design and proven. Plus I believe they have 10% more flow over stock RS7's. Their ECU/TCU upgrade is well done in my opinion. I'd highly recommend you pick up their downpipe as well as it'll really make a difference in performance. I've seen heat exchangers recommended to help prevent heat soak, so at $600, it's well worth it in my opinion along with the turbo screen relocation kit. I'm running a stock sport exhaust and it sounds great. Not sure if you'd want to replace that, but you can also wait to see how it sounds before making a decision.

    To answer the actual questions

    1) yes, plenty of options for direct replacement turbos. Yes, you certainly should get an ECU/TCU tune for this upgrade. Do you need it, no, but what a waste of money on an upgrade that you won’t be optimizing.

    2) intake/exhaust are not recommended/needed to pair with any modification. Just more noise. Turbo inlets for sure (stage 2) and maybe downpipes if you want some more mid-range power above stage2

    3) E85 as others said is your best bet if readily available. If not, or to go along with, you can also get a larger Heat Exchanger and Coolant Pump to help control IATs and recovery time

I don't recommend IE's tune for the C7 model. I've had nothing but problems with their TCU tune.

I’ve had a great experience with the TCU tune from IE. I had to remove the ECU tune for the state and left the TCU on and it’s nice and crisp, in fact I still have not put the ECU tune back on.

Very cool, and thanks to each one. I have IE in the cart but have not placed order. This all sounds good and much appreciated. Car seems to have a lot of power from 2K-3K and very quick to get to any speed. Have not pushed it yet at all (over 3K). I would be interested to know of any IE issues as I know they are one of the newest in the market. I have used them 4X previously and had just the regular issue of maintenance with water pumo, thermostat, (SQ5/S4)...But otherwise ran fairly well. I know IE combines the ECU/TCU so no choice there. I have a cable with 1 remaining VIN to be utilized. My M6GP comp had power at little more higher end but this S7 just is stupid Torqued. Have a great day/week in great health to all. Thank you.

Search the forum(s) and/or FB groups. You’ll find the negatives for the C7/4.0t platform specifically are greater and more detrimental than their other tunes on other platforms.

This platform is not one to F around with turning off knock sensing for a few extra horsepower.
