    Question Cost for PCV/Thermostat/Waterpump replacement.

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
Looking to replace my PCV, thermostat, and water pump soon. I called a local independent VAG mechanic and they quoted $2700. If it matters, it includes the breather hose and one of the long coolant pipes as well.
    Does this price sound fair?

On the other hand I can get all the parts for around $400 online and possibly do it myself. However, the job looks pretty involved. The most I've done is replace the vacuum pump and DSG service/oil changes. Also, I'm missing a lot of the tools (floor jack/jack stands/drain pan/belt tool/coolant vacuum pump to refill coolant etc....) which will add another few hundred dollars. I'd really like to do it myself but I don't know if it's worth the trouble. I guess if the price above is reasonable I may just do that, or if it's too high I'll just attempt it myself.

I'd say that's fair. I've had a shop quote me as high as $4000+ for a water pump and thermostat job alone

The good part about doing it yourself you'll gain experience and have the tools left over after the job is done. Just need to really ask yourself if you are capable of it?

It’s not a technicality difficult job. For the couple hundred bucks you might spend on tool, etc, you will have them forever and save yourself at least a grand.

The biggest issue may be bleeding the coolant system. I bought a pressure bleeder off amazon. Well worth it.

There’s plenty of info on how to do it. FCP has some videos which are really good.

Very. I did it myself on my A6 and it took a while, but when my mom's SQ5 needed a PCV, I knocked it out in <4 hours with my stepdad

One well known German shop told me $2400 for labor. Another told me about $1,000 with a walnut blast. I’m going to source the parts from FCP myself.

Avm automotive in pa just quoted me 2800 for carbon clean, water pump, pcv, coolant crossover, thermostat, both belts, idler pulley, tensioner, injector o rings, all intake gaskets and coolant related o rings ect. I thought this was very reasonable. I’m just on the fence on if I want to keep the car for a while. I may only keep it another year.

If you know what your doing I’d get the walnut blast kit from FCP if you have a decent sized compressor to power it. The results were amazing when I did my first walnut blast on my friends Q7 3.0T. Compared to cleaning by hand with solvents it is soooo much easier. I bought a new 10 gal compressor and walnut kit for under $550 total and am very happy I finally bought one. California Air Tools has some great compressors and they are insanely quiet! I can’t stand next to it running and have a conversation.

That is about what i just paid on mine parts and labor for all the same. Had no idea where my very slow coolant loss was. Until it got really bad and was leaking down the front of the engine all of a sudden. Carbon cleaning the valves made a noticeable difference and it pulls real nice now. Glad to get it done and car is like new again.

I wish I was able to wrench it because it’s pretty much a 3rd car these days so it could sit but I’d mess something up ha

Why is it that more Audi people don’t dry ice blast these things? It’s done on other platforms much more and there’s no mess to worry about.

Sounds expensive compared to walnut blasting, and DIY the walnut blast isn’t messy at all if you use the port adapter with a shop vac.
