Running winter tires in summer = dumb?

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
So I was glancing at my winter tires the other day and noticed they have 4-5mm of tread left which isn’t much. While I could probably run them one more winter since I don’t drive the car much, I started thinking about keeping them on this summer and wearing them down completely until next winter and then purchase new ones. Anyone ever try that? Is it a dumb idea?

Depends what you're running as a winter tire at the end of the day.
I got stuck on my winters longer than expected waiting for wheels but I'm on Alpin PA4s so they'll keep me running with great performance in any scenario...

If they are literally 5k away from being tossed id probably wear em out with style.

I’ve had winter tires get pretty slippery when it’s too warm

The compound is going to turn to mush in the temps. But as long as you understand the performance compromises, it's not like they're going to disintegrate out from under you.

But if I look up Montreal, it looks like you guys are only breaking 60 three days over the next two weeks. It's not exactly warm there yet. I figure when the warm days actually arrive, give it some brisk steering and braking inputs and see if it feels like too much mush to be comfortable with. But the last few mm are just waiting for hydroplaning, so I don't suggest running them overly long just to get a couple mm of high risk cost savings in.

I've done it before. Then again, we got some snow yesterday. It's been in the 40s throughout the day, and 20s in the early morning.

It's "safe" to run winters in the summer if that's the question. I say it with quotes, because obviously if you plan on doing any spirited driving, then that will inherently be unsafe.
Just know that winter tires wear away at a much more accelerated pace in the warmer temps, so you may get 1 summer out of them rather than 2 winters out of them as an example.
MPG also drops because of the increased rolling resistance.

Do with that info as you will.

Precisely why he is asking. Which to me means, he's looking for a way to degrade them at a faster pace, so he can buy new tires earlier than predicted. It's human nature to want newer things, earlier.. Or chalk it up to feeling like a kid again.

Not exactly…while I could run these one more season I think it would be safer not to.
So with that in mind, I thought there could be some savings (saving the summer tires this year) and just wear the end of these winter tires out in the summer rather than throw them away with 4-5mm left.

I think I’ll run them until it gets really hot which isn’t for another couple of months and re-evaluate then.

The tires are high performance Yokohama v905.

That's precisely what I said. In a nutshell, Running them out so you can save the summers, and buy fresh set of winters.

It's the same thing as driving on summer tires in winter. It can be done, but even on dry pavement, it's the wrong tire.

It only takes one braking event gone bad to "pay for itself."

I vote for always being on the right tire, and I would put summers on.

That’s actually good advice. I was thinking that softer winter tires should in theory provide better stopping distances on dry pavement. I was worried about them overheating on longer highway trips (1-2 hr) which I do frequently in summer months.

Anyway I actually verified the tread depth and they are 4/32nd which is the limit here for winter tires- so looks like I’ll just run them down a couple more months and then switch to the summer tires when the summer heat comes in fully.
    Thanks for all the responses!
