removing screen from master cylinder reservoir

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
    Hi guys-
Whats the trick for removing the screen inside the cap on the brake/clutch reservoir? I'm tired of breaking plastic parts by forcing them! I figure there's a better way.
    Thanks

Interesting question - I honestly didn't think there was a way to pull that thing out of there. Let me know if you figure it out as I would love to de-gunk mine one day.

    Very easy
You need to disengage a small tab on one side and pull up
I used a jewelers screwdriver (small) and pulled up using a needle nose plyers
Note the white spot on the screen insert- that's where the screw driver engaged the tab
Note the orientation relative to the slots on the top- gives you the location of the offending tab

Thanks! I'll give it a try tonight. Is the tab between the basket and the res? or inside the basket?

You exchange res fluid by removing the small yellow cap

Granted that's why that small yellow cap is there (to expose the evacuation nubs for both sides of the reservoir) but old habits are real hard to break---ie- ye old turkey baster...

Honestly good to know I just power bleed all fluid through each caliper, this is way better

I didn’t know the small cap was for removing fluid.

Personally I always took the screen out. Is there a gasket that goes with the yellow cap? That might need replacing if removed?

+ 1 for Audi making this cap.

I've been thinking of getting a power bleeder. I can see how it makes one person bleeding simple, but is it any more effective than having a kid push the brake pedal while I crack bleeders? Is there any concern about screwing up calibration of anti-lock brakes assuming I don't get air in there?

There’s an o-ring for the small yellow cap. Usually reusable but I’ve had one distort and extrude out during reinstallation before. Just be careful with it and it should be okay.

So the nipples under the yellow cap allow sucking out 98% of the fluid in the master cylinder reservoir. Pretty slick. Used my mity vac to pull out the fluid. Almost as good as the turkey baster!

Anyone have a picture of what it looks like under the yellow cap?

I have a pneumatic fluid extractor. But if there’s nipples, that might not work?

I have been using a power bleeder for years. They work great. As long as your brake master is working properly.
