Has anyone had an issue with the car not recognizing the key when starting the car?

My car has a brand new battery that’s been coded to the car. Also a brand new battery in the key fob.

When I try and start the car nothing powers on unless I have the back of the key on the dash. Even after it starts it still shows no key on the display.

I did a full scan of the car and didn’t get any faults that relate to it.

Sometimes it fires as soon as I hit the start button but the key still has to be put in the open. I can no longer get it to start if the key is in my pocket or far from the dash.

Could it be the key fob itself, is there a way to test for that?

Have you tried using the spare key?
That will eliminate the key as the cause.

Is your key fob in a case or cover? Some covers can restrict signal, depending on material.

I've had that problem... It was my battery. Try changing the battery in the key fob

Sadly we can’t find the spare key. I know when if the kids hid it from us somewhere!

All I have is the valet key for now but will have to order a second key at some point.

I think I ended up with a Duracell from Costco. My work has off brand 2032 batteries that I used first. I'd also reccomend causing some friction between the battery and the connectors to make sure there's no corrosion causing any problems.

That's what I used as well.... The rayovac I originally used didn't do well...but the Duracell hit the spot

Try flipping the battery, it might be upside down?

Did the key work after you changed the car battery but before you changed the key fob battery? When you push a button on the key fob does the "check light" light up? Did you use a CR2032 battery? If I'm understanding you, the car will start when the fob is inside the car but not necessarily held against the dash? So the problem seems to be that the range of the fob has mysteriously decreased. I think there is an AZ thread where someone had a problem with the antenna that receives the signal from the key fob; would be some coincidence just from changing the car battery.

I had this issue when I changed the lights in my garage to LEDs. The LED lights can cause RF interference, preventing the fob or garage door from operating normally. Just an FYI.

Often if it's someone who troubleshoots RF networks daily and tracks noise down to addresses with cheap LED lights?
