Looking for a tune, but not enthusiastic about crackle overrun…

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
Like the title says, I don’t want pops and bangs. I’m actually very pleased with the stock overrun setting.

I can’t find any first hand opinions or information about the different tunes available compared to each other in regards to overrun crackle or burble.

Anybody have any thoughts they can share? Much appreciated as always.

I had IE shut off the crackles in my tune, I dont like them either. Outside of the factory pops and farts in dynamic mode, I dont have any noises.

I am on IE Tune. Stage 1 had no difference that I could tell.

Stage 3 has a ton, but you can use the Individual setting, set everything to sport except Engine Sound, and it acts the same as Dynamic minus the burbles.

IE would be a great choice as you can turn your crackles off in Comfort, Individual, Auto. Driving settings

I recall IE offering no sounds at all option as well as selectable on stage 2+ tunes. 034’s more of a burble on stage 1 (think OEM doubled) while IE is pretty obnoxious. It’s really obnoxious actually.

One thing to point out is that the crackles will definitely depend on other exhaust modifications too. Like stock cat and exhaust haven't result in massive pops and bangs on stage 1 tunes that I tried (EPL & 034). There are a bit more but not a crazy sound volume compared to factory crackles. If you go stage 3 with a bigger turbo, a race cat, and an aftermarket exhaust then they can be quite loud and sound like gunshots a bit with my 034 Stage 3. I don't mind them though, but I can see how some people would not like them.

I've got some sound clips here at (11 minute mark) of stock exhaust (at the time on EPL Stage 2) vs. x-pipe on same tune.

I know tuners vary their pops and bang tunes. I think it has to do with ignition timing and dumping fuel off throttle to create a rich condition. I'd honestly prefer to have this completely off or stock. It's mild with 034, but not something I want to keep. With Accessport and hopefully DS1 in the future tuners will offer OTS where you can turn burbles off or on when selecting their OTS tunes similar to how the A3/GTI/Golf R platform has it currently.

I should note that I have a CTS catted downpipe installed and front resonators deleted.

Thank you guys for the replies. I’ve been watching videos of people with these tunes and I think they’re maybe not as bad as I thought? My ex had IE on her Mk6 GTI and it burbled the entire time you were decelerating. I thought perhaps the B9.5 tune would be the same.

It definitely doesn't burble the entire decel. With tunes its maybe a little longer than stock, but main thing is it gets more pronounced and then the more you modify the exhaust/cat it gets louder.

Who doesn't enjoy sounding like a shootout at the OK Corral when coming to a stop in bumper to bumper traffic? Only reason I haven't gotten a tune yet is because of the pops. If the IE tune retains the OEM sound, I may have run out of excuses

It doesn't do that coming to a stop unless you're sitting there revving up and letting off the throttle to do it on purpose. Especially in bumper to bumper traffic. It does it when downshifting to engine brake or when decelerating rapidly from a higher rpms by letting off the throttle, not just coasting to a stop or moving around in bumper to bumper traffic. You'd have to be doing it on purpose, like going into manual mode while in sport, then staying in 1st gear and just using that to accelerate without upshifting which will build enough revvs to pop when you let off. Also could just use comfort mode in bumper to bumper traffic, no room to enjoy sport mode anyway. The conditions for it to do it are pretty much the same as stock sport mode, just more pronounced and if the exhaust is modified then it's a lot louder.

Ended up pulling the trigger on the IE Stage 2 like 30 minutes ago. It’s 20% off right now. Hard to say no! And yeah it doesn’t happen in any mode but dynamic so, only OK Corral when specifically requested. I’m hoping it’s not too much. Time will tell.

Sure, but I'm assuming you don't feel the need to do that right? So not sure what the problem is as far as getting a tune. If you don't like them at all that's a different point, just sounded like you didn't like the idea of having to always hear them in traffic on your car.

I don't want my car to pop and definitely do not want to listen to others popping while stuck in traffic. I don't want anything more than the OEM burble under any conditions though. Sometimes I do put the car into manual mode in traffic so I don't have to brake/throttle all the time and that means higher RPMs to decel from. If that produces pops, it's a no go

If youre in traffic, just go into comfort mode/manual and you won't hear a damn thing. Youre over thinking this. Its not like gunshots, its very tamed in a sense to where even if you have just a front resonator delete they're just like slightly more exaggerated than stock.

Sounds like you dont want to be "obnoxious" so that tells me you won't be changing the downpipes or installing a full exhaust? Most tuners have a 30 day trial. Give it a go and if its just such a big deal then return it!

I think I just have a bias against pops since race cars/supercars don't pop (on the regular) and you hear the tone of the engine. My s4 pops and mostly burbled every once in a while and I loved it. It's very racecar when it's rare and random :) The 034 tune is absolutely incredible in comfort, but in dynamic, (with my high flow cat) will pop 5+ times every downshift. I'll admit I definitely liked it at first but after a while I just wanted to hear the beautiful engine note running through the range. Now it reminds me of those wooden sound-makers I would spin and play with as a kid

If this was directed at me.. turning it off via putting the car in comfort mode will not work for me as I drive in individual mode at all times. This mode is configured with sport mode across the board with the engine sound in quiet mode in addition to the sound generator volume turned down to 0 via coding. I'm looking for a tune that does not pop and maintains OEM sound characteristics.

Only want a stage 1 tune, no exhaust. Trials work when you are committed to get a tune no matter what and is just a question of from which tuner since once you flash, its TD1 even if you end up returning the tune. Imagine getting a TD1 while not tuned.

Im not trying to fight with you, im merely making observations based off the things you've said in this post. The tune even in comfort mode is MILES better than stock. But because you brought up TD1, it shows that its in the back of your mind. Maybe its better for you
to wait until your warranty is up, and by then MAYBE they will make a non-burble map you can flash to.

I know what you mean, but I think you also know what I mean lol. some will as well (especially newer ones). The f1 video is still kinda what I would like (2-3 like our stock tunes did), mine is a lot more. Ooh you know what would if anything be a really cool sound is the f1 blown diffuser! (a great sound I wish f1 cars still had) and that aventador is tuned for sure

I'm with you on all this. I hear you don't want to get tuned, decide it's not what you want but then forfeit the not tuned ECU status. With all the other advances in giving us tune options, it's a shame that stock sound is not one of them.

I think the only way through this (if you want a tune bad enough to compromise) is to make the best guess which is the least offensive tune and give it a 30 day trial.

I went APR when there were no other choices. I liked that they kept the stock sound with v1.0. I'm not sure if the current version changed that. It's been too long since I was on stock. No one here talks APR, since it's not tune at home, but you might give them a call and get a definitive answer from them.

    UPDATE:

I’ve had the IE stage 2 91 octane installed since yesterday.

The crackles/burbles/farts whatever you want to call them are not annoying.
I think they sound the same as stock but 2 to 2.25 times the duration.
I think, like many have said, that the fart acoustics are determined by your exhaust setup.

Overall I’m very happy. The thing pulls like a damn freight train now.

Glad you're happy with the setup! The exhaust as you found is the real culprit for volume of the burbles/crackles and what causes them to start sounding like gunshots.

Other than just being an obnoxious and silly sound what is the benefit or drawback in the pops & bangs? Isn't it just fuel that isn't spent correctly and gets burned up in the pipes? I hate the noise.

Any feedback on APR tunes? Thinking about going that route as I'm not looking for anything crazy and will eventually upgrade my intercooler in the summer.
